I just went through the same thing. If you know the replacement switch you used is good, then go to the junkyard and get a wiring harness out of another car. be sure that you use 86-88 if you car is that year, or 89-91 if in those years. the reason is that the wiring sequence for the blinker switch is different between s4 and s5. if you use the wrong harness it will fry your blinker swith. (trust me).
if that doesnt work, your switch is bad and it is relatively easy to resolder. the harness is usually the cause of the problem.
