no power to fuel pump

car would not start yesterday morning. fuel pump was not working so i bought a new one. put new one on but fuel pump still not working. hooked up old pump straight to the battery and pump was bad. hooked up new one straight to battery worked fine. when i installed pump in car, pump still not coming on. what can be the problem? diagram of relays in the book i have are different from my car because diagrams are for an automatic, and mine is a stick. my car is a 88 vert n/a. Please help me get my baby back on the road.
thanks so much for your help!!!!

The pump only gets power when the engine is cranking or running. If you jumper the yellow check connector by the right strut in the engine bay, and turn the ignition on, the pump will get power. Remove the fuel filler cap and you'll be able to hear it. Also, there's no difference between auto and manual fuel pump wiring, only between NA and Turbo.

What made you think it was the fuel pump? From what you've described so far I'll bet the old pump is fine and you wasted your money on a new one. Randomly replacing things is the worst kind of troubleshooting. Always try to find out what the problem actually is before buying new parts.
