texFCturboII nailed it. Also check the contacts on your relays. I'v seen corroded relays/fuses do some weird things on cars.

Buy a nine dollar digital meter from Harbor Freight and see what the output of you alternator is at idle and also at 2000 rpm. I'd say the alternator is kaput or the two wires on the back are not connected up to it.

Voltage Regulator in the alternator kicked it. "Hell Yeah" is not the right answer when everything gets super bright. You could be burning things up. You want things to be bright by having More available Amps so there is less load on the system, not higher voltage for things that can't handle it.

Alternator should be putting out 14 V max. Higher and you gotta replace it asap. In the mean time disconnect it or turn on as many things as you can to keep the voltage below 14, until you reach the auto store. But you can drive for at least 30 minutes on battery alone if it's a good battery. Keep the warranty info on the replacement alt. They are notorious for failing within a few days/weeks/months. Or maybe it won't fail. Keep trying if it does.

And ya you probably blew out your headlights on the higher voltage. You might as well check your fuses in case you got lucky and it's just a fuse. Be happy if everything else still works fine...
