No fan shroud, or bigger problem?

I was tuning my 'new' engine tonight and after (mostly high) idling for at least 30 minutes, it started overheating. I shut it down just as the temp guage was starting to climb.

I haven't re-installed the fan shroud yet and I'm **REALLY** hoping that's the reason. I've called it a night, and I'll install the shroud tomorrow, but if anybody knows if a missing fan shroud can cause this, please let me know!

What? Put that shroud on now! The fan does absolutly nothing without it. The only way the motor gets cooling at idle is the fan and you took that away. I realy hope you did not smoke your motor.

Now ya tell me!

I shut it down 5 seconds after strange noises started coming from the rad area, so I hope she's okay.

iceblue is right. The fan shroud is vital to the cooling system of the RX-7.

I had to get rid of my fan shroud due to the fact that the fan kept eating the shroud. There's still melted fan shroud plastic stuck to the fan. Never had a problem with overheating, and the other 2 owners that had it after me never had a problem with it before I bought it back.

^ hey man your just down the road from me a lil ways got allot of friends in Navarre. Oh yea if the hurricane don’t hit us this SAT there will be about 200 of us meeting at the pcola pear as we do every now and then. Races will be deep up in Navarre if you don’t know.

Dood you got allot more issues then the shroud. You really need to get them fixed. As well if you don’t idle and sit you wont notice any issues. The fan is not used above 40mph. As well the S5 temp gauge is not linier and is very pore to judge off of. If it moves up to HOT this means hey you blew your motor I thought I would let you know.

Actually, the clutch fan is thermostatically controlled, so it doesnt differentiate from road speed..

Just a little FYI.

Cool. I work Saturday night. 9pm-6am. Otherwise I would be there, also, just bought back the car today, so it's not tagged or insured. That's later on down the road, after I get the headlights and seatbelts working. So for now it's nothing more than good looking stuff for the garage.

^ Your talking about bayfront, right? I used to go there. You might know my car if you've been going there for a while, it was White w/ blue racing stripes and spoiler, rims. All that good stuff.

That is true it's engagment is heat controlled.
It has just been debated that around / 40 mph that there is enugh flow to free spin the fan and cool from air to air passing.

Thanks for the adidtion.

Yup blue I was talking about bayfront. I dont recall your car maybe I seen it. I am the one there in the green RX-8. Anyways hope you get your REX on the road soon.

It should'nt be the shroud. I'm running mine without the shroud and it never overheated...

Running without a shroud is one thing, but sitting still is - hopefully - another. I definitely do recall that the fan was never really spinning at full tilt...even as the coolant started boiling. I'm hoping that this is because there wasn't enough hot air flowing to the fan's clutch to kick it in.

Please don't post stuff like this. The fan shroud is REQUIRED. If you are not experiencing problems after removal, you are in the minority. Or your temp gauge is broken. Either way, it's very irresponsible to make others think they can just rip it off and be OK.

That said, it's nice to see yet another fan shroud topic. As if the existing 5,001 of them was not enough.

Oops...5,002 it'll have to be, I'm afraid

This I did search for this, but maybe not hard enough....What's the proper procedure for bleeding air out of the cooling system?

I guess it's been a long time since high school auto shop!

Well, I alpologize if I'm mis-informing people, I'm just going off of my own experiences, and to date have never had a problem, and I know my temp gauge works, and then again, it may be due to the fact I rarely let the car sit. It's usually above 60mph at anygivien time when being driven.

If you don't believe that removing the shroud doesn't significantly reduce the fan's capacity, you're delusional. You should only have to look it it to understand that. Most of the air the fan is moving is drawn from within the engine bay instead of through the radiator. Airflow through the radiator will be significantly reduced, so the fan will have to work much harder to keep the car cool. This means the clutch spends more time engaged. Under prolonged low-speed conditions (idling, in traffic, etc), temps will eventually rise.

EDIT: That was a general comment, not aimed just at BlueS5.

If you want to shell out for a new one, see Mazda. Otherwise look at the For Sale section or list in the Wanted section. People who've swapped to e-fans successfully won't need them anymore.
