no doors over rear storage bins? also - coolent question

theres just carpet... i know the bins were standard in '86, but what about the hatches that go over them?

also... i havent had much time to look throught the fsm(cause we bought a house), but when i checked the coolent there was just enough to cover the bottem of the tube... shouldnt the coolent level be to the bottem of the coolent cap?

still dont have her running yet tho

storage bin doors were standard, what was optional was the lock in the door. Also, my coolant doesn't go all the way up to the coolant cap, it covers the bottom of the thermostat neck and upper rad hose. Any higher than that and it will run into the overflow bottle.

bins _were_not_ standard, I've seen a stock rx-7 without them.

and I usually just fill my coolant up to the cap, it doesn't hurt anything.

Bins were optional on some 86 and 87 models.

You can find that by reading the Standard and optional features sticky thread at the top of this section.

However if it came with bins, it came with Bin doors

i did read the sticky up above and was confused as to why mine didnt have doors... thats why i made the thread...

i wonder what happened to the bin doors then... cause i can lift up the carpet in that area and put stuff in the bins if i wanted... strange

edit: i can go snap some quick pics of youd like?

on the ones "without bins" theres carpet covering 2 wooden planks that have a hole in the middle, if you pull up the carpet and stick a finger in the hole you can lift it out and whoala! bins! All Rx-7s have that space Mazda just sdecided ot cover them so they could charge extra on the models that did have them I bet your previous owner lifed up the carpet and redid it over the lidless bins.

Normally on FC's not equiped with bins, there is are wood panels screwed in place and the whole carpet goes over them with no openings.

So if you can get into that area, either someone has taken out the wood panels and you are talking about lifting up the whole front section of the rear carpet, or you had bins and someone has taken off the lids.

The later is easily seen by if you have the bin mounting trim and lower bin carpet pcoket screwed to the bin support. If you don't have the bin sides, and mounting trim and carpeted pocket found at the botton of the bin, then someone just pulled the wood panels out

^^ the winner. My '86 GXL(the targa one) actually came with a rear seat from the factory but it was gutted in favor of a roll bar, instead of leaving the interior unfinished i bought a set of bins and carpet to make the interior complete. The piece of carpet i bought was blank for a base model. So i just cut the hole in with a box cutter.

Perfect.....I was just talking about my bin-less seven the other night to a friend.
We were wondering where the bin-less carpet piece would come from and why there was wood were the bins should be.

It all makes sense now

as I recall you only saw no bins on the 86-87 base model, and 86 sport, but the Luxury may have been missing bins in 86 as well. I'd have to go look in the Standard features and options thread to make sure.

ecyrb | SLC has a "bin-less" '87 Turbo II. Heh, when we saw it, I thought it was a home-made job that the previous owner might've done.
