New trans going in. what clutch?

I have a 91 rx7 (na) and my trans just went out on me. Recently i picked up a 87 Na transmission to swap in to my car. Im just wondering what year clutch do i go with? i'v searched a bit and could only find things on the turbo II swap.

All the NA clutches are the same diameter. Get the 91 n/a stock clutch from advance auto or something and it'll be fine.

Thanks. I called all the local parts stores and they quoted me around 230 for the clutch kit. Should i go in ebay and just get a cheap stage 1. The RX7 is just my daily driver with no major plans for more power. Maybe a small shot of nitrous over summer but nothing crazy.

wow, 230 for a clutch kit.
I got one from autozone for 130 or so.....though thats the worsest clutch I have ever used.
Its from Fenco, called Dynapak or something. lol
Its in my gxl right now. For daily driving its ok, but for track use which I did about 6 times on it since april last year, from road course to drifting......it sucks (atleast for drifting).

^ that site is the first place to beat/meet the exedy kit on ebay. Hell clutch city online even sells their ebay clutch for $5 more!

BTW, go for an S4 clutch...they are always a lil bit cheaper for some reason.

just go OEM unless you plan to drag race it. it's not that expensive, and OEM components will last the longest.

worsest??

Remind, an S4 tranny uses a different tranny mount than what you use for an S5 tranny. And there really isn't any difference between a NA s4 of NA S5 clutch. Actually, I think you could use a GSL-SE clutch as well. There is a difference between TII S4 vs S5, but if you're running an aftermarket flywheel S4 is the way to go because it is slightly bigger. Why is one of those un-answered mysteries as why would Mazda reduce the size of the clutch when you've designed in 20 more hp.

Anyway, if you running straight stock and strictly daily driving, then the Autozone special would be fine. Actually, a pretty good deal as for the $130 + tax you also get a pilot bearing, throw out bearing, and clutch alignment tool not to mention life time warranty.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...entId=cat10001

However, if your into spirited driving at any level, the relative low strength pressure plate could cause the disc to glaze up way quicker than you'd want leading to premature slipping. If this is the case, considering the cost of labor (or the pita labor if you're doing it yourself), spend the extra $100 bucks or so and get a good strong pressure plate with a decent quality organic disc.

One thing your really might consider, considering you have to do the whole R&R labor anyway, is swap out your stock flywheel for a good aftermarket lightened steel or aluminum flywheel. Debates abound on this forum as to the merits and demerits of lightened steel vs aluminum for daily driving (I'm in the lightened steel is much better for dd camp, and is certainly less expensive than aluminum).

If you reallllly want to step up the clutch, I know where I can lay my hands on a centerforce Stage II pressure plate and disc for $300, and a stage I for $250 both plus shipping. I also think I know where you can get a turned RB lightened steel flywheel, but I need to ask what they want for it.

Hell. Yes. Worst clutches ever made. They barely suffice for daily driving, but when you start beating on it in any way, they burn up fast.

I've got advance auto parts beck arnley clutches in my t2 and my gxl and they work fine. Both chirp 2nd gear and hold fine every gear. I've got almost 8k on the t2 clutch and it works great.

I haven't had a chance to run the gripforce I ordered yet in my RX7, but in my old B16 civic it was nice. A little stiffer than stock and held up great to my abuse.

Gah, the F1 clutch is an ebay special. Man up and get the Exedy, with clutches you always always always get what you pay for.

I'll say again, by far the biggest expense is the labor cost when replacing the clutch. So I strongly urge you to seriously consider getting at the least a good strong pressure plate. The incremental cost is small when you consider the whole cost package and what it would labor cost you to upgrade later.

I got a beck arnley clutch too. Most good auto repair shops hail by that name. And it holds up well to the 9k rpm abuse

+1, worst clutch ever. I burned through two of those in a year. Got one off ebay (forget the brand, wasn't a cheap *** pos), still going strong.
