BC New on site and looking for help

Hey everybody. so i just bought a 87 RX-7 GXL for 1850$ can. im putting a new clutchi in tomorow. Anyway its got like 180 000 kms on it and i was just wanting to know if i should be looking into gettin the engine rebuilt soon. Or what i can do to check and make sure its gonna be ok. I need it to be reliable and fast lol. Ive found it revs on its own alot is that normal? ill be sitting at a sop light and it will rev up to like 1500 rpm and go down then back up and down. should i be worried?

A rotary that's taken care of will last you past 200k miles (300k km); especially with an NA. Your bouncing idle is probably due to a bad or misadjusted throttle position sensor (TPS). Search and you'll find tons of threads on it, but the basic gist of it is that it has varying resistance over the throttle range. This alters the voltage to the ECU, which adjusts idle appropriately. When it gives bad infomation, the ECU will over/undercorrect endlessly.

Here's a link w/ adjustment info:
