New to rx's. Got some ?'s
Ok yall now i know you all love your cars and engines. I need to get some info on my car and when i tell yall what i'm doing i might get hate mail for it but just bare with me and help a new rx-er out.
What i'm doing is pulling the 13b engine and all and swapping in a built chevy 327 .030'' over (331 cid) v-8, Th-400 trans, 2800 stall converter, re-balanceing the car's weight to 50/50, and useing it for day to day plus weekend drag racing. I should be hitting 10.90's @ over 130 mph when done but i need some info from folks that knows more about theses cars than i do.
My car is 1986 mazda rx-7 with an auto trans, in pretty good shape. I love the body style, the good aero, 2700 lbs, 50.2%/49.8% weight balance. Its not the GXL modle but i know its got IRS with a 3.909 gear but did these come posi rears?
Does the stock gauges give any trouble?
I have a good 13b engine with 130k miles runs good. How much do yall think i can get out of the engine, ECU, and wires thats goes from the ecu to the engine?
Do you all know where i can order a roll cage for this car? I need something like an 8 or 10 point cage
I know how to add to traction in soild axle cars but the IRS is diff. What kinda of traction bars etc is sold for the rx-7?
What amp alt. does the rx-7 have?
Thanks for any help,
John

I'm somewhat new to these cars too but I'll tell you what I can (which is very little).
The stock gauges (namely oil pressure) have a tendency to be a bit off but nothing to worry about. Although, if you're putting in a V-8, go all out with a custom cluster or something.
The engine, ecu, etc. will probably get you very little. Your engine is right at that point where it could use a good rebuild so who ever buys it will probably expect to do that and deduct the cost. Worth a little at least.
That's all I know, good luck with the project, even if you are decreasing the rx7 population

Thanks for the info redwood.
To tell you the truth bud i might be helping the rx-7's out here. In 50 miles from me i know of 1 rx-7 on the road. This is camaro, nova, monte etc country out my way. Even though my rx well be chevy powered the 1st thing you gonna see will be a rx-7 body right. And i wanna add this to keep yall guys from hateing me cause i need somewhere i can go to find out about these cars and this is the place.
I'm a v-8 man. I been building chevy v-8 race engines for years. The only import i had was a 300zx when i was 16 and it throwed a rod. I built a street/strip 453 hp/ 500 plus ft. lbs torque 327 and the only thing i had to put it in was a 1973 chevy full size truck. Well it tips in at 4700 lbs plus me. With the aero of a house. So i started looking at every car to find the lightest best aero body with the closest to 50/50 weight. The only chevy car was the vette and that just aint what i'm wanting. Then i started looking at imports and came up with two the rx-7 and the 240z. Well im working on a full 6 sec 240 z drag car (gonna take years to do) and so the rx-7 is right for my streeter. The swap can be done easy, the car looks great, good aero, light weight, From what i heard a great rear end, about the right gear for my engine and torque converter, With the aero and the weight of the rx-7, and the power of my 327 i can drive it everyday, race it on the weekends and run high 10's low 11's , and still get better than 20 mpg. Also in Ga. Theres a custom smog law. Right now my county dont have smog test but will have in the next year but back to what i was sayin. The parts of Ga that has smog test the law is if you put a custom engine into a car where that never came you can get a waver for the test. Heres how it works if say car ----- only came with a 4 and 6 cyl engines. Then if i put any brand 8 cyl in it and take it to the main dmv in atlanta i can get a waver for smog. But this dont work with like say a 82-92 camaro cause they came oem with 4, 6, and 8 cyl engines. So you see it has to be an engine with more cyl than the car ever came with so going from one 4 cyl to a bigger 4 cyl won't work. So thats my reason for wanting to pull off this swap
