new to rx-7's and rotory's, help needed
hello everyone, i just purchased an 88 turbo II and am totally new to the whole rotary motors thing. i have modified 2 hondas in teh past and am now looking to make some power with my rx-7. i have been trying to raead up on some posts and have been searching through the board, but i have a few questions. what do you guys think would be some good first mods to do and what kind of things should i know about rotory's in general. my car has 52,000 miles on it and i bought it from an older guy who had it sitting around for awhile. i have just purchased a racing beat fuel cut defender, 3 inch downpipe, and custom 3 inch exhaust....any more suggestions would be great, thanks

another question is i have asked a few people and they siad that a blow off valve is not a good idea because of the mass air....does anyone have a blow-off on an 86-88? i was contemplating getting one down the road but i heard it might make the car idle prertty rough.????

sounds like a nice ride! I think you are going in the right direction. I work on Hondas too (mostly for other people now) and one thing I noticed about RX7s is that fuel management seems to be more "important" then with other cars. Like even if u dont want an all out track car u still need things like a bigger fuel pump bigger injectors and/or an Apexi SAFC or similar fuel/engine management product or system. Anyway good luck and welcome to the worl d of RX7s!

You will want to remove the turbo and port your wastegate. Do a search on this topic (wastegate porting) to find any info youll need. With that 3" exhaust you will be experiencing some moderate boost creep with the stock S4 wastegate. Also, you will want to install a larger volume fuel pump. The Walbro 255 is pretty much the most popular, and can be picked up for about $90. Ths stock fuel pump cannot flow enough to keep up with what your engine will need to be taking in with the 3" exhaust. This is BAD, engine go boom.
Welcome, and post some pics of your Turbo2

You should also port the wastegate. When you open up the exhaust like that, you can start getting boost creep, which could cause damage to/kill the engine eventually. Also get a boost gauge. They are invaluable for TII's as the stock boost gauge is damn near useless. Also, what kind of exhaust setup does it have? Dual/single and does it still have a cat? If it doesn't have a cat, you will definatly need to port the wastegate.

it will be running the 3inch racing beat downpipe, no cat, back to dual free-flow stainless mufflers... does anyone recomend not installing the FCD before purchasing a boost gauge and upgraded fuel pump? i think thats what im going to do because it seems llike im going to be seeing more boost then the stock pump should handle, i was also thinking about getting a manual boost controller to regulate how much boost ill be running.......thanks for the replys

Just in case you didnt know you cannot lower boost with a manual boost controller. With the free flowing exhaust setup you have planned your boost will be past stock levels of course and you will need a FCD or you will hit fuel cut. The only way to control how low boost is it to restrict intake/exhaust or port the wastegate. Fuel pump is a good idea and boost gauge should be the first thing.

Remove these items:
stock air box
turbo inlet duct
fan and fan clutch with shroud
air pump and air control valve
egr valve
a/c and drier and condensor and all applicable hoses
this will clean up the engine bay quite nicely. If you do it a little at a time, it will be a pain in the ***.
Adds:
replace turbo inlet duct with custom fab(see thread)
replace fan with electric(see thread)
add aftermarket blow-off valve(see thread)
block-off plates for acv and egr(mazdatrix)
replace alternater pulley with dual pulley and remove the extra 2 pulleys off of the crankshaft
replace all vacuum lines
add 255lph fuel pump
apexi safc ($200) shipped on ebay
fuel cut defencer(mazdatrix)$95
After all is said and done, you've spent less than $400
and have a clean engine bay and a little better performance

i dont think anyone answered your blow off valve question, so i will. yes every turbo car needs a blow off valve, and yours already has one. not aftermarket, but it has one.

about the blow off valve, he might have been talking about a venting BOV which blows off the pressure into the air instead of the intake (if it goes into the intake its called a recirculatory BOV). I am not actually sure if a blow off valve that vents is ok in these cars, I know with DSMs (eclipses talons and lasers) that unless you replace the MAS (mass airflow sensor) with a GM model then you will have the symptoms u desribed. BUt with RX7s u should be fine. Venting BOVs (like the TurboXS Type-H RFL) are generally louder.
