New to Rx-7s - going to look at an 88 Turbo tonight

Hi,

I found an 88 turbo 10th anniversary rx-7 with 126000 KM's on it. He is asking $5500 CDN

Im going to take a look at the car tonight.

The problem is that I have always been into 300zx's - i have owned 2 of them.

I am looking for something different.

Can someone tell me how good the 88 10th ann. turbo is compared with the other years and what are some things to look for when looking at the engine?

Whats the gas mileage like?

How many more K's can you put on an 88T with 126KM's before some thing goes and is a rebuild a fairly easy do it your self procedure??

Can someone generally just reassure me that an rx-7 is a good reliable car??

Thanks for your help!

It will be plenty reliable, depending on how well the previous owner took car of it. Tenth anns. aren't usually neglected. There is no performance difference between the 10th ann and other TII's. My 87TII has 150k miles on it. Im not sure how that converts to kilometers, but its a good chunk of hours on the motor. Check for good idle and any sign of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. And if you do buy it, do some major research into modifications before you do so. Good luck, hope you like it.

Gixxer,

Hey the 10th AEs are one of the best 2nd gen RX-7s. I think you'd love these cars if you've driven 300zx's before.

The 2nd gens can be very reliable. Rebuilds are ususally done at 140-160K miles (not how many KM that is).

I'd ask him if that's the original engine and get Mazda to perform a compression test if it is. Most people either buy a dirt cheap Turbo II with a blown engine & replace themselves or pay a slight premium for one with "low engine miles," "new engine," or "recently rebuilt."

Rebuilds aren't too dificult. You can do one yourself for $1000-$2500 US. That includes a "near crate" engine and the major components that should be replaced.

Gas mileage is (light foot) 19/25 (heavy foot) 15/19.

Horsepower potential is 300-450 (or more HP) on the 13B engine and 650 or more on the 20B engine (3 rotor).

Here's a post you should check out that has some good information and PICTURES.

I bought an 87 TII 2.5 yrs ago. 70k miles, $3,500 US; since then I have spent $2,500 on repairs, no paint. It is in great shape and runs well. RX7's have quirks, some more than others. Don't spend your last dollar on the purchase and I hope you have something else to drive in the snow. As for fun I think it beats a Z, Audi, Maxima, etc...
