New rx-7 owner, performance question:

I recently purchased an 88 rx-7 convertible, 5-sp. The car is has a major problem though, I know the torque is extremely low, but the car is extremely slow (I'm used to driving v8 powered cars). I'm trying to get some advice on what the best performance upgrade is that I can start with. I'm not talking a supercharger or anything, but intake, exhaust, what? And what are the benefits of such. Any help from you guys would be great. I need to make this awsome car GO!
Thanks.
