Exclamation New RX-7 owner - engine bogging down

I'm the new owner of a 1991 RX-7 convertible, 5 speed, ~122k miles. It starts up just fine, and will rev to the limit standing still. However, when you begin to drive it, or put it under any sort of load, the check engine light comes on, it boggs down, falls on its face and loses power at around 2000 to 2500 RPM. The dealer, over the phone, says it's probably the "metering oil pump" with a parts cost of $1700. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, and what the solution might have been. Thanks for the help.

do a search on OMP
and Plenty of people have this problem.... and some people take out the pump and plug the oil lines.... then they run pre-mix putting oil in the gas

so do a search on metering oil pump, oil metering pump, and premix

My dad almost bought this car. Red vert right? Southside of indy? I wasn't able to come and see it, but he told me about this problem. My guess was the aux. ports. I don't see how the OMP would contribute to the engine bogging down. I'll be almost willing to bet the ports are carbon-ed up.

Yep, that's the one

I've known the owner for 10+ years, and knew he'd spent a lot of money on the cosmetics. I've never had an RX-7, and thought I'd try this one. The computer throws out a code #27, which, I'm told, relates to the oil pump. How do you clean the ports? Thanks.
