new rx-7 owner

I just aquired an 86 rx-7 n/a automatic. Right now it needs a fuel pump to get running, and then i will be good to go. I have been reading about what it would take to get it turbo'd, but at this point im not going to be doing a swap just yet. What I am wondering is what can i do to make up the hp diff between the turbo model and mine sticking with the n/a engine for now? I am wanting to do basic mods that dont keep it down for long.

I am working on getting a higher paying job, and if i get the position I am looking at now, the sky will be the limit, so in the long run, I want to be running 13s with a car suitable to be a daily driver.

theres not much mods you can do for the N/A's as far as power gain. Now if you want to disassemble the engine and port it, then you'll be making about what the Series 4 Turbo makes but it wont be anything near what the Series 5 FC's...

13's with an N/A??? Not likely, or even possible. Don't quote me on that, cuz I'm sure someone would come in here like, "NUH-UH I'VE DONE IT!"

Well, basic mods would of course be exhaust and a drop in air filter.

If you want horsepower gains, then you're gonna want to port the engine. Street porting, bridge port, periph. port... that latter two are more extreme, and kill gas mileage and make the car pretty loud.

I think the highest I've seen an N/A get to was less then 210hp. Or something like that. N/A FC's, especially auto's, are not fast. If the sky's the limit, turbo swap it. That's the only real option you have if you want to get some power.

thanks

ok, thanks for the info, I guess i will just leave it as is until i can afford to do the swap. After the swap, what would it take to run ~13s? After i get to that mark i still want it to drive like it was meant to do that. again, thanks

Just get the car running and drive it as-is. If you get the higher paying job, then buy a Turbo II RX-7. Attempting to turn your current car into a Turbo II will cause a lot of down time, and will end up costing more than simply buying a Turbo II. You can even drive your current non-turbo RX-7 daily while you modify the heck out of the Turbo II. You can easily get a Turbo II RX-7 into the 13's.

ya i thought abut that, of course i might just get a gen 3 if i do that... or an RX-8 depending on what my pay rate is, lol. Either way, im sick of my heavy, fwd Grand Am GT, and want something that at least acts like a sports car. :P

You chose the wrong car if you want to be running 13's

^ Best plan so far. Even the auto-tranny FC RX-7 is still a real sports car. Have fun and save money until you find something you like better. Modifications are a waste of time and money.

The 3rd Gen RX-7 looks great, but it is a maintenance nightmare and overpriced in my opinion. The RX-8 is a sport coupe, and does not drive like a sports car because it isn't a sports car. I still think a Turbo II is your best bet, but a 3rd Gen RX-7 would also work if you don't mind the hassle. There are some really nice built-up RX-7's for sale every now and then, and you can usually pick these up for as little as half the price it would cost to build it yourself. Another choice if you get the higher paying job is to save up some money for a down payment on the new RX-7 or its equivalent.
