Smile New rx-7 here... I have a few ?'s

Hey guys... i just bought my 1st rx-7 1991 had a few things wrong with it, Needed a tune up, got that out of the way... i am very new to rotary, i know very much about piston motors... so i have a few questions...

1. wheni first start the car the rev's go to about 3k for about 10 secs and then come to normal idle....is this right?

2. How fast should the motor rev to high rpms in Neutral... im used to 4 and 6 cyl engines... are rotaries a bit slower in rpms?

3. When im done reving the car from mid-high rpm ranges its got a bit of back-fire to it.... is this good?

1) yes its called something warmup i think i forget the name but it is normal

2) not sure what you mean but a vid would help show what you mean

3) yes in fact its encouraged spitting flames out the back is what is happening when it backfires nothing to worry about its our " anti tailgating ' function

welcome to the 7 hoep you enjoy them
any question you can use the search funtion or RETed or RotaryRessurection are great for info
most questions can and will be answeered by the search function

1) Accelerated Warmup System (normal, but I'd remove it becaus it's useless) --- Check the FAQ at the top of the 2nd gen section

2) Mine revs just about as fast as my old 6cyl did...

3) I wouldn't be too concerned about it. IIRC: I think the term is afterburn. Basically it's extra gas being ignited by the hot exhaust (rotaries run really rich).

1 yeah its suposed to rev to about 3k for a few seconds, then drop to around 1500, then eventually go down to about 750 when its fully warm

2. well if it drives and pulls fine then the motor is fine, cause the stock fly wheel its pretty heavy.

3. they all back fire,

The rotary has very little power down low, and comes stock with a fairly heavy flywheel for the nubs who can't clutch properly. All that will result in a slower rev response, but there are solutions. Let it breathe - CAI, Header, exhaust; tune it - NA rotaries like a little more advance than stock; TB mod; and the most potent: light flywheel (might as well upgrade the PP and clutch too). I hear slappin an e-fan on there also gives a little more top end...
