New to the rotary scene...Question

Hey all. My name is Micah. I'm new to rotary engines (Not engines all together) although i have read up on them enough to keep up with the lingo...I plan on buying an 88-90 FC within the year, once i can get my barn built for the space to work on it...
First Question:
Which model would be the best to buy? I would be looking for an Un-mod'd FC for the piece of mind that everything is there, and intact. I plan on giving it a nice turbo, intercooler, and the works down the road, once it runs fine without the mods.
Second Question:
What exactly does rebuilding a rotary engine entail? What can i get away with replacing? What needs to be replaced?

It's a newby question, but I am very curious. Thank you.

The years 88-90 span two different series of the 2nd Gen RX-7. The 86-88 is the Series 4, and 89-91 is Series 5.

Check out this site for information on buying an RX-7. This gives you info on what to look/watch out for when considering buy an RX-7:

This site also has tons of information that you might want to look at as far as rebuilding rotary engines:

I will say that turbocharging an NA, you may cause yourself a lot headaches based on what I've read on these sites and the forum.

Search on this forum. There is more info than you will care to read about this topic.

Good luck.

Hi, my name is Micah too!

As far as what you should buy, if you are going to go turbo in the long run, buy a turbo to start with.. It'll save you loads of headaches/money. S5 (89-91) TII would be my recommendation. Newer look, good engine, a little more stock power...

As far as engine rebuilding, you should invest in a good rotary rebuilding video. atkinsrotary.com has one, rotaryaviation.com has one... and there's another one floating around somewhere.. do a search.

Welcome to the forum!

Power difference is due only to higher boost. But the irons on the S5 are less prone to cracking, although the wiring is worse on the S5. The S5 looks better as well. It also weighs quite a bit more.

I'd get an 88 TII and find a donor car for body parts and get either S5 irons for a rebuild or have the engine dowel pinned if you want alot of power, 400+ hp that is.

Either way starting of with a stock car or a properly modded one in the first place is always easiest.
