new rebuild has low oil pressure

I did a quick search, and came up with this thread
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...w+oil+pressure

Looking at this, people brought up the front cover o-ring. Somebody mentions that s5 needs some sort of white washer, while s4 does not. Well this engine is a s4 but with the s5 front cover on it to keep the electric omp working properly.

Does this require that washer? Just seeing if this might be the case before the tear it apart for no good reason.

No it does not need the white teflon ring with s4 front iron with s5 front cover. How do I know? I'm running a s4 keg with s5 front cover. My oil pressure at idle is +40pounds and +60 above 2,500rpm.

I had this problem when I built my motor. I'll never make that mistake twice!

What gauge are you using? Stock sending units can go bad or get bubbles in them and freak you out for no reason. Doesoil pressure raise as you accellerate but drop off as you hold rpm? Thats what mine did when I had bubbles. Was almost like if I pumped the pedal I could keep the pressure right. I put on a autometer, and cleaned out the stock one and they both read good know.

To clarify, using the Teflon ring has nothing to do with the front cover, it is dependant on the front iron you have. If there is room in the bore for the Teflon ring, you need to use it. If there is only room for the o-ring, then you don't use the Teflon ring. And you have to make sure to use the proper front cover gasket. The one with the big hole is to be used for the Teflon ring, but the small hole is for the o-ring only.

Once the engine starts running, the pump will take care of itself. As long as there is oil pressure, the pump is working fine. But don't expect much pressure (or any) by cranking a dry pump.

dry cranking an oil pump means it hasn't built pressure yet. when i prime any rebuild i take out the EGI fuse and crank the motor until i see the oil pressure gauge move, it is now not "dry".

I pack the oil pump cavity with some vaseline and pour a little oil down the oil filter pedestal. it may not be necessary but it couldn't hurt.

have you cranked it at all? rocking the e-shaft won't do anything. the pump only drives oil when it is spinning with the engine so you'd have to rotate it manual but your arms will likely get tired before you see any oil pressure.

generally speaking it takes me about 30-40 seconds of cranking the engine at 300 RPMs to build any oil pressure in the engine, that is with the oil cooler still full.

honestly though, i don't be shy about cranking the engine without starting it, there is no load on the motor and the engine assembly lube will protect the moving parts. now if we are talking several minutes of cranking and no oil pressure or sign of oil being pumped through the filter(i dont always trust the gauge connection) then i would say you have a problem like a oil pump drive gear key that slipped out during reassembly.

yea it started up but i noticed it had no pressure and cut it off. i pulled the oil filter off and its dry as a bone, pulled the front oil cooler line off and nothing. i know the o ring/teflon ring is in place and i know i assembled it right. but i however did not prime the oil pump when i assembled it

oh ****

k, i'm thinking you lost the oil pump drive gear key, if you disassembled the oil pump that is. that key is a BITCH and why i don't touch the oil pump unless i see reason to disassemble them now.

sorry to say but i think you will have to pull the front cover again and oil pump and cross your fingers that the assembly lube did its job.

well if you didn't remove the key then something else is missing. either the pump is missing one drive gear, the e-shaft key is missing(this would cause a balance issue though as well) or the oil pickup tube is missing, loose or you have no oil in the pan. with the engine running even a dry pump will still prime rather quickly. you're gonna have to pull either the pan or the front cover or both.
