a new purchase...
I am curently looking at purchasing a 1988 RX-7 Turbo II. The body is in great condition and rust free. The interior is in very good condition. The bumper and a taillight need to be replaced but other than that the car is in very good condition. I have not inspected the car yet because i am about 300 miles away so i am working through my dad, but I have been told the car runs great. The asking price is $1,800 and normally I would jump at the chance to purchase such a nice car but the only thing that makes me hesitant is the car has 180,000 miles. ive read the purchase sugestions on this forum and have looked around. the car seems well taken care of. everything i see seems to point to the life expectancy of a Turbo II being about 150-175k miles before they "die". what exactly will happen when the motor "dies" and can i correct it with replacement of parts or will the whole motor need to be replaced and is there anything I can to to extend the life of my car well over 200k miles? Thanks.
It really depends on how well maintained the car was its whole life. My great uncle had a 79 RX-7 since brand new 0 miles from factory. Ran it over 400k+ on original motor b/c he maintained it so well.
When the motor "dies", as long as it holds good compression you can rebuild it. If it has 0 compression..time for a new motor.
