new owner asks: why must everyone try to race me?

Sigh...

I've been wanting an RX-7 for some five years, and finally got mine about half a month ago. Seeing as how this is my first "sports car", everyday driving has changed quite significantly (in more ways than just being a lot more fun).

Everywhere I go, someone tries to race me! It's annoying the hell out of me. I try to pass somebody on the highway, they match speed and honk three times. At any given stoplight, the person in the lane next to me revs their engine up and launches when the light turns green.

Maybe it's the color? The "Blaze Red" does attract a lot of attention, I suppose. Once I get the money, I'm painting it '87 Arctic Silver. I'm hoping it'll put an end to the stoplight racer confrontations, and perhaps add a sleeper element to my car.

Can anybody else relate to this? I'm really enjoying the RX-7 thus far, and it's definitely been worth the wait. This is my only gripe with the car, but I guess it's something I'll have to get used to.

will you give them their satisfaction and race them?

it's really your choice. and btw... the RX-7 was born to race...
in saying that though... I'd never race my 7, as I'd be risking too much if I did. The law is getting very tough on street racing/illegal street use... I could lose my car if I get caught. so I don't bother...
(well, not with honda's, non-turbo's and v8's anyway..)

but I know what you mean about the car attracting unwanted attention though.. everytime I pull up to a carpark with kids hanging around, they always seem to stare at me and my car... or maybe cause my car's so f*cking loud...
It's impossible not to get noticed...

People wanting to race comes with the car... just get used to it, and have fun with it. Theres nothing like just staring at a guy in a baby blue honda with a huge wing on it with a look of disgustment and boredom. Then just pull off of the light like normal.

I got my 90 FC3C little more than a month ago, and this also is my problem. What I do is,
at the light I rev it up and then turn the key engine off. Act like it won't start, and while they're laughing, it suddenly starts as the light turns, and I'm at the next light when they arrive. Don't try if your new to the car, people might think you have *****, and we don't want that label put upon our golf carts. Paint it pink, and buy a yugo.

I wsh there were more ppl ike that in my area. I get so excited when I see anything on the road or around town that is a buick century, ford freestar, or an s10. But I'm from the country in upstate NY and none of these farmers care about my rotors. Anytime I see a honda out there with a wing or something I start to rev it up and **** but its like I'm an outcast or they're just too scared cuz they never give it back. Maybe most of NY, myself excluded, are just a bunch of sissies.... or maybe anyone that races already knows what an RX-7 is.

Anyone got an explanation for my upstate anomaly?????

I just watched a video on the audobon, that parking lot for senior citizens overseas, and it does show a delivery truck in the right lane doing the speed limit, his. The last time Mario
raced professionally, remember his last words-The objects in the mirror are closer than they appear, I must be slowing down, cause they were never there when I was younger!
RX stands for speed, red stands for power, and I'll drive nothing else, ever. By the way, SearsPoint Raceway is 15 miles away, so dont even ask where I'll be doing my accelerating!!

I can relate. The first day I had my newly painted 7 on the road (after driving a Jeep for over a year), some guy in a black Honda gave me the stare down while I was waiting to pull out of my driveway for the 1st time. The next day, wednesday, I pull up to a stoplight, and there's another black Honda beside me (different guy, different car). Revs his engine, and takes off with a bat-out-of-hell sound. I end up smoking him with my stock 7, but when he goes by me (had to turn) I notice his 5" exhaust. I laughed to myself. I hope to meet him again.

I completely understand your problem. I'm 36 and sick and tired of 16 year old punks who are too stupid to properly wear a baseball cap doing the same crap whenever I take out my 91 Vert.

I have found a way to have a little fun, though. A couple of times at redlights when some punk tries to get my attention and wants to race, I'll rev my engine a little and look over his way but when light turns green and he is peeling out I drive off normally. For some reason this seems to **** them off :-)

I've never had anyone try to race me.

Wait, I lied. One WRX tried to play on the highway, but the CB antenna came off at 85mph and I had to pull over to collect it (it was knocking on the side of the car after sliding free).

This is why I hate Hondas. After smok'n a bunch of em you'd think they'd realize that their cars are friggin slow.

There are several things you can do. When they rev on you at a light you can throw up the finger and thumb to make an L on your forehead to indicate you think they're a looser. If they hong on the freeway and it's safe to do so drop anchor and dive for the slow lane. They'll think you saw a cop or got hit with radar/laser. You can write them Rice Cop tickets.

You know, I only really got people trying to race me way back when my car was blaze red.. It was a horribly faded and oxided blaze red... but ever since I painted it, I haven't really had anyone try to race me. Of course, for most of them, even when I accellerate normally, and they're "racing", I still beat them to the light.

People try to race me, and when I'm not going 80 miles an hour, all they want to do is pass me now, in my van or Toyota, it's no problem, I've been passed more often in this car in the past two months than I ever was in another two month span. And I'm usually the guy revving at the lights, because lights are simply a means for me to work on my takeoffs, but I don't speed too much, just go fast quickly.

I do like it when guys try to race me, though, I totally rev and make like I'll race his crap box, and when the light goes green, I just go like normal, no racingness at all. It's like 4,000 RPM, and then down to 1,500 and go.

I like to think that there's a difference between driving a fast car and driving a car fast.

I'm surprised by the number of people on here who say that no one will race them...! Maybe it's a regional thing? Where I live, RX-7s are pretty rare -- maybe that could have something to do with it. Because it's not like anyone with a car worth running wants to race -- so far it's been the Eclipses, Corollas, Civics.... etc.

but, I agree -- it is fun to mess with them. a hyundai wanted to race me on the highway, so I got behind him and turned on my right turn signal to take the next exit (which happened to be in the middle of f'in nowhere) to, presumably, find a more appropriate place to race. he took the bait and I swerved back on the highway. the look on his face after that still makes me laugh.

it is a fairly regional thing i would guess.

that or the T2 scoop and a clean paint job scares off most ricers. *shrug*
