New to FC

A few months back I received a 91 FC from a friend as a project, thanks Gremlin.
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-rx-7-1986-1992-vehicles-108/91-streetport-rx7-949950/

Coming from an FB, I'm looking forward to learning a new car. My goal is to make this a dual purpose car, strip and road course for promoting the Beat The Heat. Anything I put into this car is tax deductible. Looking to gut the engine bay including all p/s, a/c, etc.

I had given the motor from my FB to a friend to help him out and the chassis to another for their racing. Thankfully, involved with a rotary again.

A 1991 Mazda Rx7 S5 with an already ported 13B. Motor has less than 6k on it before the started took a dump. Ordered a new one and went to install today, no dice. Found out I have the drive train from a TII, good for me, lol.

New starter will be in tomorrow by the time I get off work tomorrow. Sunroof looks like it just may need to have the track adjusted and relubed again along with the internals of the motor(Thanks for the awesome writeup from another member on this forum!).

This is the vehicle I'll be building for a Strip/Track car to race in "Beat the Heat." The car was a gift from a friend and overall has a good body with the exception of the front fenders. If you look under the wheel wells, you can see a pinch point. Everything beyond the fender sheet metal looks clean though. The engine bay will be gutted of any non-essential items, such as the a/c, p/s, smog, etc. I just want to see the long block and radiator, battery will be relocated. Then, I'll move onto either paint or a body wrap with my design/logo along with the car being outfitted with police lights.

Ends up I need a starter for a turbo setup. Jens is kind enough to let me borrow his battery charger so I can see where the current one stands. I'll be getting a new battery soon anyways, just want something running now so I can tweak the sunroof.

I installed the new starter and it wouldn't even turn over. Figures, like an idiot I took the car off the stands before checking. First thing in the morning I'll be checking the starter posts. I have a feeling the manufacturer for the starter bolted the wire to the wrong post. Should be a simple fix. The battery already in the car took the charge and is holding. Changed the oil and smelled like gas, was possibly flooded. I also plan on changing coolant tomorrow. If I really had a clue to what was under the hood, I'd start ripping useless crap out. But apparently this car isn't as simple as my old FB, lol.

I'll also be popping the access point in the top of the tank to check out the inside. I just want to hear this thing turn over again and see what the streetported motor feels like. I'm utilizing Sidejob money for this project here and there so I don't dip into regular household budget. Will definitely be needing race seat(s) and harness.

Feels nice wrenching on a 7 again.....

I'm wanting to go with a turbo....But, I've also debated the Camden Supercharger. I know, I've seen mixed reviews. I like the novelty of the SC rotary, as most I've seen in this area are turbo'd. I want to use this car in both drag and road course as part of my program and thinking the SC may be nice. Been seeing a few Camden kits here for sale or currently equipped cars.

If I went SC, was thinking of a carb'd 13b. But, still reading and abusing the crud out of the search button, lol. By all means, please throw in your comments and/or experiences/preferences.

An rx7 without a turbo is probably one that runs. Lol

Car looks nice and you got a good deal. Build a turbo motor in the garage while having fun driving this car every day in the mean time would be the way to go.

Wow. No, just please, no. A combination of a Camden and a carb is just a combination of two downgrades. The rotary has such strong exhaust pulses, why waste them by not driving a turbocharger?

Nothing like a supercharged 13B pushing out almost 180 RWHP while sounding like a 2000HP dragster.

So it'll be like the equivalent of a Honda with a fart can? Redlining 4th gear at 50mph? Lol....

Thanks for the info. I had just heard things back and forth about better tunability from a carb'd motor. Honestly, I had seen so many local 7s with electronic issues that it worried me, lol. I look further into the turbo setup. I had previously talked with a local shop in partnering up in a semi-sponsorship role for some things, including turbo. We'll see where it goes.

The so called "electronic" issues are usually the result of not understanding the system. Not saying this is always the case, but it is most of the time in my experience.

You have the drivetrain from a TII, so why not just install a TII engine as well? Cheaper than the Camden and 250HP with just some bolt ons.

Well, the turbo/SC was a thought down the road. This current motor only has 6k on a rebuild by another forum member with a streetport and curious to what it's like. A TII motor has always been a thought as well. My mind is going 100mph in a million different directions with ideas. So, I figured I would at least get it started for self pride, lol, then go from there.

Did you get my PM?

Well, got the starter figured out......

Wrong wire connected:
March 22, 2012 3:19 PM - YouTube

Then, as the gas flowed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wiEo...3&feature=plcp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HcG4...2&feature=plcp
There were some acorns in the exhaust, lol.....

Next, the sunroof. Has power and moves, but seems to hangup at the part we it initially lifts as well as when supposed to shut. You'll see me give an initial shove, then it does the rest. Here's the vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N5u_...1&feature=plcp

I'm going to follow this great writeup on Monday(next day off) to pull the sunroof apart and clean it up/re-grease.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-archive-72/sunroof-repair-write-up-56k-warning-956360/

I've loved this site over the last 10 years and always been a great source of how-to and specs. Thanks guys......Far from done with this car, although not going to be as fast of a build as some others.

Too many connections on the starter wire

New starter was bolted wrong, corrected:

Ready to make magic happen....

Was nice hearing the car run, funny watching the acorns shoot out the exhaust.
Going to follow the starter wire all the way back and run one continuous wire for the sake of reduced connections. Anyone know where I can find the same black connector as seen in the first pic? Didn't find at O'Reilly or Fast and Furious GhettoZone....

Going to be getting a steam cleaner to start spraying the engine bay and cleaning it out. For those who have gutted their interior, was there anything that helped removed the factory deadening? I plan on replacing it.

Time to bring this thread around again. For hit by a DWI last month when working an off duty traffic control gig, totaled my Tundra. Now I have mire time to work on this again. Reading all the FAQ for emissions and such for things I can remove. Only plan on keeping power steering. A/c has already been removed from the engine bay it looks like. But, unlike my old carb'd FB, this one has a lot more wires, lol.....I don't want anything left under the hood. Started it up and reversed and drove back and forth in my short driveway, lol....had to do something.

Lol.....yeah, fortunately, we don't have the sniffer test in my area yet, but they just peak at the power steering and look for what resembles a cat.....I think I'm going to end up with a turbo on this motor after all. Need to finish gutting the interior and look at fuel cell options, cage, seats, dampening....

For those who like pictures, here's what happened to my truck
