New to engine maintenace and have ?'s

Sorry to bother you all about another one of these 6 port questions but I have been searching for information for a while and have found a lot of usefull information but have one maybe two questions that I haven't found answers for yet.

If the gaskets for the actuators are bad would that keep them from working properly?

How exactely does the actuator know when to open and close? I took them off once and sure enough they were stuck closed but we put them back on and I didn't really feel that much of an power increase if any in the higher rpm. Also even from the start I didn't fell any if much extra go around the 3800-4200rpm range.

A few other unrelated questions.

There are three cats on the '88 RX-7 GTU correct?

Would there be any, even if small, benefit to taking off the first two and running a normal pipe?

How often to the injectors, primary and secondary, go bad?

That is all I will bother you with right now.

A little background on my car may be usefull i guess. I bought the car a month ago and have done most of the maitenance that it needed and have just gotten to these things. The car was owned bye an elderly man around 65yrs old prob who owned it for 15yrs. I am sure he didn't take it over 4krpms much if at all. I have freed up the actuators and rods without taking anything apart. The car has 66k miles on it.

Sorry for the long message but your help is greatly appreciated and if you have any questions feel free.

something like three cats., a pre-silencer and two cats. as for taking them off you can get more top-end. if you run a open pipe all the way its kinda loud, like let off the gas when you pass cops loud.

Yes, if your actuator gaskets are bad, it will affect actuation. There are actually 2 ports on each actuator, even though only one is used for the "input"...This is actually a good idea, it makes them interchangeable from front to back (S4's, anyway, don't know about the S5's).

Do the "grease trick" on the actuator rods to verify if they're working or not after a "spirited" drive...

You will get a very noticeable power increase by gutting the first two cats and leaving the main cat intact. If they're OEM, they're probably half-clogged up by now anyway...

My injectors had 175,000 on them when I finally pulled them to have 'em cleaned, and they still performed well at that point, if that helps with that question. However, if the car has sat for long periods, they can get gunked up...

Cool the only thing about gutting the cats though it may not be a problem if I get my car liscenced in Florida when I go to college. Will it still pass emissions? I don't think missouri laws are that strict and I was told it might pass. Another question is, if I gut the first two cats will that effect the backpreasure anough to make the auxiliary ports not work properly?

Also I am thinking about going with the RB replacement/presilencer combo. Would that be to my benifit? Would it make a greater difference than gutting the cats?

Your replies are greatly thanked.

Gutting the first two didn't affect my ports' pressure too much, but I only ran with this setup a couple of weeks before the Bonez hi-flow and RB cat-back went on, which did kill the back pressure, necessitating the air pump "mod"...

Can't even begin to guess emissions results in Florida with the first two gutted, but with only 66K on the car, the main cat might still be good-to-go yet...

well I guess the question is does Florida have emissions? I herd that they didn't. Especially since a friend of mine on his Trans Am is running straightpipe 3" borla exhaust.

nm guess that answers that question.
