new elec fan but radiator smoking?
i installed my new electric fan today. its a 16" perma cool. i wired everything up and i know it works fine. but it wont turn on now that i put the temp sensor part in. it never turns on? how hot do i have to get it? my temp gauge was sitting near the middle of the bar, like usual. it never got hot. but the radiator smoked like crazy? whats up? is the radiator dead? and how do i check to see if ive cracked the water jacket? i read somewhere that if i turn it on w/ no radiator cap and it gurgles, its got a broken water jacket. is this correct? should i relocate the fan sensor somewhere more accurate? ive got it on a radiator hose right now. upper one to be more exact. does anyone know whats wrong?
If the seals, and I'm talking about the ones that seal between the combustion chamber and the water passages that look like large orings in grooves, go bad you should have water exiting the engine into the overflow tank. Are you continuosly losing water and having to refill? Does the overflow tank fill up and overflow? Seems you would have noticed that and written it in your post. Sounds like the fan sensor isn't working. Apply some heat to it from an external source that you know to be above its trigger point and see what happens. Did you get a schematic with the new fan? Or how about this since you have zero responses so far.......call the Perma Cool help line. Mounting on the radiator hose does not sound right to me. Never done this job, but it seems somewhere on the radiator tank would be better. What does the instructions with the fan say about its mounting?EDIT.... Here is the site http://www.maxi-cool.com/ I noticed a block that said *HOW TO CONTACT US*. Their FAQ didn't do much for me.

thanks for responding. i think it was just a bad gasket. it looked like it was coming from all over, but it was really near the thermostat. it was behind that hose. when i squeezed the upper radiator hose, it fizzed like crazy. if not for that, its nearly impossible to spot!! but its gettin quite a bit of the liquid out. the overflow has never gotten any fluid in it. so, ill try that out and see if that fixes it. ive fixed it once, but i must not have sealed it well enough. i was in a hurry...
im also having smokin problems. im almost positive that my oil seals are goin bad, its smoking something horrible past 5k. oh well, its got 163k on the OEM motor!
time for a port job and rebuild!
