Talking New to the Board and A Couple of Questions!

hey everyone,

I'm obviously new here and this is my first post. i've been looking for a while now for some kind of car that is a little unique and fun to drive that I can throw some mods on to make it relatively fast. I have always been intrigued by rotaries and their capabilites, plus I think the RX-7 looks cool (all gens).

I wanted to ask a couple of questions, I'm looking for a 1989+ Turbo 2...

How reliable are the cars, and more notably, the apex seals on the engine?

how much are the more common replacement parts and how much would I expect to pay for standard maintenance parts?

how expensive are common mods (boost controller, exhaust, clutch, intercoolers, intake, fuel upgrades, etc.)?

how easy (and how much money) is it to build a mid 12 second drag car that is fairly reliable (not daily driver, but weekend fun) and wont cause me a lot of heartache in the long run?

finally, how much could I expect to pay for an '89 Turbo II in good overall condition (something I woudlnt have to immediately sink money in to get running properly) and where is the best place to look?

My other option (right now) is to save the money and invest in an older muscle car...any other suggestinos are welcome!

Thanks in advance for all the info, I look forward to learning all abou these cars, the rotary is quite an amazing engine!

JagdStealth,

The seals are reliable and the 13B engine (stock) can make 450HP reliably (and more) and 15-18PSI of boost. The 20B engine (3 rotor) can handle even more HP as well.

The main thing to avoid with rotary engines is running lean at high boost.

Most people looking for a serious dragster start with a fresh engine, step up to 3MM apex seals (from 2MM), large port, etc.. etc...

If your looking for a good streetable / weekend dragster, then I'd recommend taking a normal turbo TII rx-7 with a farily low mileage motor, mild street port, perf exhaust & intake, downpipe, perf. catalytic converter, FMIC (front mount intercooler), larger primary & secondary fuel injectors, engine mangement system, and guages.

On my 91, I'm still working on stage 1 wich is exhaust, intake, cold air box, cooling panel, fresh air headlight scoop, gagues (very important), and a few other items. The stock fuel systems good to about 240HP before needing fuel system upgrades.

Stage 2 for me will be FMIC and perf. radiator, enging management system, and a few other items.

Stage 3 - which I'm not planning to do to keep fuel economy decent would be larger primary & secondary fuel injectors and possibly a 3rd set.

Not too many replacement parts needed. Adjustable shocks are always a good upgrade. The 2nd gen rx-7s use a toe in / out rear suspension and many people upgrade the bushings with more modern materials.

The stock drive axel and transmission can handle the additional HP, but your right a better / stronger clutch would be good.

I'd imagine 300rwHP (~370 fwHP) would put you in the mid/low 12s.

My advice is find you an 89-92 turbo II with a newer motor. I paid a premium for that but you can also find them for $3900-$5000 if you look around.

You can dip into the 86-88 years as well. Just because they make slightly less stock HP doesn't mean they can't handle 300-450HP. They cost less as well

I'll let those who've done the extreem HP cars reply on costs. There are several rx7 performance websites that have staged upgrades - so you can price them that way as well.

I should also note rx-7s inspire a bit of obssession. The turbo II in particular is a SUPERCAR with perfect 50/50/50/50 balancing, light weight, high reving engine, and porshe borrowed suspension for high grip.

You should also know the 2nd gens have a TON of bodykits & headlight kits, TONs of performance accessories, available new OEM & classic car parts, and lots of regular accessories (dash cover, cargo cover, moonroof windguard).

A few pics for you:

Thanks a lot for the info Vaughnc!

I was never aware that the RX7 came with a 20b in it? Or were you just mentioning the 20b because it could be swapped in?

Some of those cars look awsome! I was a little worried that aftermarket support would be a little limited, but I suppose with the long run of rotary engines (13b has been around since, what...1973?) performance upgrades have been plentiful! I'm coming over from a more standard turbo side (3000GT) and wanted something a bit cheaper and more fun.

Hopefully parts arent too expensive, I'm assuming I could do a stage II upgrade and get somewhere in the 300HP range and keep the mod bill around 3000 at most, which really isnt too bad. a total of $8000 invested in a nice car and it'd be capable of 12s with some driving skills (and maybe slicks for the track )

One other more 'off-topic' question. I'm guessing this is liek all other rotaries and with a free flownig exhaust I can make some flames pop out the pipe?

edomund: That 1st red 7 is the savannah (turbo/vert) from Japan. I'm not sure if that front is stock or not but vaughnc should know.
