Question Neighbor, 88 n/a, fuel issues, suggestions, beyond me, tried some stuff!

Working on my car and guy walks up and says he has 88 n/a, manual, with fuel issues. Went and looked, and here's the scoop. Major fuel out of exhaust. Pulled fuse, which is what I read, turned over, again, and again, let sit. Tried. Nothing. It will push start, but major fuel issue. Pulled plugs after running, and lots of fuel on plugs. Every so often, will start on its own, but very seldom. Man doesn't have computer, so trying to help out. Hate seeing RX on side of road.

Gonna check for error codes, but thought I'd post first, and welcome suggestions. Also, he recently changed out BAC, but was having fuel issue first.

Thanks in advance.

Severely dirty or locked injectors (if it continues to flood), Pull the leading plugs, and pull the EGI fuses and crank it over a bunch of times, you should see the 'mist' of fuel come spraying out (also a good time to verify compression just by looking to make sure the pressure waves alternate back and forth, if there's a dead spot, well the engine's fubar'd) Anyway, hook everything back up and try again, if it absolutely refuses and floods continuesly after that, I'd replace/clean the injectors, or check the compression with a gauge. woof.

Thanks Rat, I got a gauge, and will check for compression and flat spots. Is there some obvious reason, other than the ones you've given, why it would push start, and run, without it being the injectors? I've got the trouble codes for my 90, I'll download them for his year and see if maybe I can provide more info. Even though his is not working, sure is nice to have an RX close by to talk in person.

Thanks for the information.

88's code checking is a bit more difficult, requires fabbing up some LED's to jam in the diagnostic connector. Does it run well once it's running after being push started? or does it just stall out/run like ***?

It runs like timing or tps is out of adjustment for about 5 minutes, then it comes back into its own, but still is running rich. There doesn't seem to be a lack of power, but the gas is the major concern. No fuel leaks internally, as far as the engine bay, but just a real strong fuel smell.

Does it idle once it's running? If so, I'd venture into a faulty water thermosensor and/or air thermosensors (one in the AFM, and the other on the dynamic chamber if I remember properly) , and I'm guessing the PD isn't leaking off fuel pressure? Short of tearing manifolds off, I'd try to check the various sensors (AFM, thermosensors, etc), then i'd move on to the injectors and check all of those (pain to do, but I can't think of many other things to cause such), you could also just try a full tune-up as well (new plugs, wires, filters, etc), even if the cars not running (as long as it has compression that is), that's almost always the first thing I do, makes it easier to troubleshoot everything else if all the normal stuff is up to par.

Thanks again Rat, as far as idle normally, yes, sort of. Not surging, but definetly not smooth. Getting dark now, but before we did compression check, his leading and trailing wires were hooked up wrong, needs new plugs, and wires, battery cables were frayed and exposed, and has some nipples on vaccuum lines that should be hooked up. Someone did a number on this one trying to fix, so I guess we'll start from basics, and go from there. He is obviously newer than I am, but at least I have done a lot of reading, so maybe we stand a chance. Will post with some updates, once all the obvious problems are taken care of.

Thanks again.
