FSM, you'll need the AST special tools to do the job or be creative and make your own.

it's not a very simple job, i break a puller on just about every other teardown.

Would I need to use the Mazda bearing puller or could I get away with a universal?

there is no generic puller that will work for the rear main shaft bearing, it sits over the output shaft which is about 2 feet beyond where the bearing resides in the tranny.

Standard bearing puller clamp and a brass hammer will do, but be careful. Innovation and need will do most of the time. Not rocket science.

A brass hammer should work or even better, a copper hammer. Every man should have a copper hammer
