Turbo II production started in 1986, but they were 1987 model year cars. The build date doesn't always coincide with the model year.
However, so you can verify for yourself, your VIN should read something like this (these are the first letters and numbers of my VIN, a 1991 Turbo):
JM1FC3324M
The last three numbers may vary by type of RX-7 and depend on many factors through the FC series - turbo, n/a, convertible, etc. What matters here is that last letter, in my car's case, an M. This letter identifies the model year. Working backwards that gives us (I is skipped, as it could be confused for a 1):
L - 1990
K - 1989
J - 1988
H - 1987
G - 1986
So, whatever letter that is coincides to the model year.
The only other thing I have experience with that you asked is radiators. My last RX-7 had an all aluminum Koyo and I loved it. Truthfully, any all aluminum radiator with a thick core is a nice upgrade from stock, but I'm partial to the Koyos.
