Well I found an RX-7 around my area (an hour and a half drive). He's selling it for $3500. He's rebuilt the engine and he's got a bunch of mods on it.


Here's a list of what that car has:

-Blue Recaro reclinable seats
-Short shifter
-Greddy turbo timer
-brand new Autometer boost gauge
-brand new Autometer fuel gauge
-brand new dual Racing Beat exhaust
-brand new Catco high flow cat
-Custom down pipe (needs to be modified slightly to fit; ie needs to be bent a tad more for clearance, and the flange I have needs to be welded on)
-4 brand new Sumitomo tires
-brand new kyb 6 way adjustables gas struts
-brand new Tein lowering springs
-brand new T4 turbo
-brand new Stage two carbon kevlar racing clutch
-brand new front rebuilt brake calipers
-brand new dual blowoff valves
-brand new turbo xs manual boost controller
-racing beat fuel cut off switch
-brand new tre performance 255 lph fuel pump
-brand new 4 inches thick 12inch high 27 inches long 3 inch inlet and outlet front mount intercooler
-brand new racing rebuilt internals
-new oil pump
-street port
-new spark plug wires

-new master slave cylinder,clutch cylinder,brake cylinder
-new brake pads
-new water pump
-electric fan
-emission block off plates installed


I think it needs a new aftermarket ECU, but wouldn't a GReddy e-Manage work?

The body looks straight but it definitely needs paint. If it runs perfectly then $3500 would be legit. If it needs work then offer him $2500.

he said it idles high, and one of the pipes need to be bent a bit more to meet the exhaust pipe.

 

3500, for all that, all you have to do is clean it up!

 

So is this a good buy? Also, is it easy to install an ECU after I buy the set?

 

this will take some fixing
not saying it's not worth it
but just look at the piping it's just stock exhaust mild steel from a muffler shop

 

and what is up with that intake? and two bov's wtf.

 

That engine bay is pretty haggard, but nothing a good weekend cleaning can't take care of.

 

if you a good with wiring a new ECU wouldnt be to bad to install, the only thing would finding a tuner to tune the ECU for you application. but for all that that isnt a bad price, see if you cant get the price down alittle bit further.

and i dont know what the 2 BOV's are for, does that even do anything to an advantage?


if you want a new ECU, maby look into a Haltech?

 

I'm not to sure about that intake, and the IC piping is pretty ghetto, yeah two blow off valves?. I don't see that exhaust piping doing anything to keep the IC air cool. I thought you didn't need the AFM hooked up before the turbo, actually at the risk of making myself look (more) like an idiot, I don't recall ever seeing a AFM on a Turbo . Either way, corrugated piping for the intake hose?!

 

Minus all the technical stuff (I'll just leave that to the ppl who know it) it looks...ok. Has he driven it lately? Looks like **** from all the dirt but not bad with a bit of work. Seems to me he did all that work and just decides the pawn it off on another person b/c he may not have done a lot of stuff right. But im no expert. Thats just what i understood months later after i bought my car. Found more stuff wrong with it than i ever wished. Good luck

 

The intercooler plumbing may not look so great, but I don't see any major problems with it. The welds look OK, the bends could be better but they will work just fine, and the whole "problem" about pipe heat transfer is blown way out of proportion by well-meaning internet junkies who have no education or experience with thermodynamics.

My concern would be the quality of the "rebuild", as the random painting of components, poor quality of the BOV's, and that mess of an intake do not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the owner's finances and/or understanding of cars.

I recommend that you take the car to your local tuner to get an estimate on what it would cost to get it tuned with a piggyback ECU or standalone EMS. The standalone EMS would be better if you can afford it, keeping in mind that you could sell the turbo timer and Racing Beat fuel cut defenser to help offset the cost a little bit.

Also, the 4" thick intercooler is probably too thick for street use unless it is designed for very high flow (aka low efficiency).

 

So would this be a good buy or not?

Out pf curiousity, did you drive it, watch for smooth running (no 3800 hesitation, etc.)?

I don't know about you guys, but that AFM looks way out of level to me.

 

Dont do it. A painted wiper motor and sensors sends out all sorts of warnings.

 

I haven't driven it yet, but I posted in the Hampton section to see if one of the members that live in Va Beach could check it out. I'm kind of busy at the moment and can't find the time to drive down there.

 

If your new to Rx-7's pass on that, it sounds like a good deal but thats someones headache your buying. Find a stock car and do the mods yourself. That car looks a bit "slapped together", who knows what the internals or the port job looks like.

Nevrmind the red/white/blue scheme. Captain America would look good whippin it tho.
