Above all else. please wear safety goggles.. gas BURNS so bad in your eyes.. this tends to be a sort of messy job.

undo the gas fill cap
car is off
locate the filter under the drivers fram rail..where it starts to go up.
the filter usually doesn't come with a bracket so, try to spare the stock one.
I find it easier to simply undo the bracket first and the seperate the two.
To block off the fuel lines you could use a #2 pencil. ( not the eraser end)
The manual takes care of the rest....
about 30-45 minutes your first time....good luck.

It's not so messy if you depressurize the fuel lines before you disconnect it.

Simply unplug the fuel pump, start the car, let it die, and you're good to go.

For the hatch models look beneath the carpet on the passenger side strut tower. If it's not there rip up the carpet until you find a plate covering the fuel pump. Remove the plate and unplug it.

I've changed the fuel filter both ways, I prefer going through with the extra effort to unplug it. I don't like taking a shower in gasoline.
