If your going throught the trouble of wireing them open, you might as well to the throttle body mod, http://jefcard.rx7life.com and clikc on trickz

Thanks Jef, but the reason I want to WIRE THEM OPEN first, is so I can FEEL if there is any difference 1st. If there isn't any, then I won't do the TB mod...

well there is a small lever that you remove in the pics, I imaging thats the one you open, although I am not sure it its going to activate the throttle cable at all. You *WILL* notice a difference with the TB mod if your plates are working or not, plus you will remove that pesky 180+ degree coolant from passing through the throttle body, that alone is worthit.

#1 - pull off your intercooler
#2 - look towards the front of your TB (just below the TPS)
#3 - you will see a small "bar" with a spring around it.. this bar and spring is connected to a linkage on the TB that opens the secondary plates.. there is a white plastic "cap" and a small screw that holds the bar and spring onto the linkage
#4 - unscrew the little screw pry off the small white cap, remove the spring (There should be a couple washers as well)
#5 - using some wire you should be able to figure out how to keep the linkage wired down to keep the plates open
The reason this is easier then doing the whole TB mod is because you don't have to bother removeing the intake manifold etc... It's quick and simple.. can be done in 30 minutes.. once you become more familiar with your car and it's diffrent parts, then you can tackle the complete TB mod .. Other wise you're just asking for trouble..

Thanks again Chris, your the best! This way I can tell if I noticed any improvement or not, before I go ahead and do the complete removal mod all together. Here in Vancouver its close to freezing and so I don't wanna lose any of the warmup systems for the TB, as it will idle high for too long and take forever to warm up. I'm going to tackle this tomorrow !

Hey Rosh, Cold starting is not that much of an issue with the plates removed, my TII sat out at minus 8 last night, and had no problems starting, it just idles lower for a bit, and then sits at 800 rpm after that...
Where you live in balmy BC, I wouldn't be to worried about the cold starting issue...FC's seem to have more of a problem with hot starts than cold ones...

can someone please tell me: are there actually any HP gains to be had by removing the unnecessary set of throttle butterflies? Or is it all about optimizing the smoothness of flow?
i am in a position now where it is ONE of the viable mods on the agenda, i just don't know whether it is worth it.
Thanks,

The easiest way(at least on my 90 NA) was to just hooke the vaccum line going to the dashpot dealio that opens the plates, directly to a vaccuum nipple the manifold. Took about 3 seconds to do. As soon as your engine is started there is enough vaccuum to open the plates.

Since we're on this topic, what the heck keeps the 2ndary Throttle Plates closed until the car warms up anyways? How does that system work..?

Actually, nothing holds the throttle plates completely closed on a warm or cold engine. Here is how the system works: There is a manifold vacuum line running to a plastic gizmo on the firewall side of the throttle body. From that gizmo, there is another vacuum line running to a diaphragm that hooks to the secondary throttle plate linkage. When the engine is cold, the plastic gizmo conducts vacuum to this diaphragm. This limits the secondary throttle plate opening. Of course, under conditions where the throttle is opened wide enough to lose manifold vacuum, the diaphragm will bleed of, allowing the secondary throttle plates to open wide eventually (It acts as a delay, preventing hesitation from sudden dumping of the secondary throttle plates). Now, when your coolant reaches operating temperature, the gizmo closes, the diaphragm releases, and the secondary throttle plates become straight mechanical devices, that is they open wide as soon as you stomp her! Hope this clarifies things!

PS on my 87 TII, the vacuum line to the gizmo is capped. Keith and I know that we are never to stomp it until the temp. guage is at full operating temp. We have never had a problem yet, cold or hot!

I've been listening to all the theories and so forth on this MOD and finally GOT a chance to DO IT tonight. LIKE WHOA MAN, kicked up the performance notches unknown to mankind!!! Before I never had a KICK when my secondary injectors came on, but now its like WHOA! At 3800rpm onwards, the car hauls ***! I just know that at part throttle the car pulls like WAY BETTER then ever before. High end is incredible. When I floor it, it pulls stronger then before too. I don't know WHY, maybe my 2ndaries weren't opening at all before or not opening all the way. This was DEFINITELY a worthwhile mod, definitely a MOD I could FEEL!
