Need help! Engine troble

Car info: 1987 Non turbo. No mods.

In the morning when i start my car it dies right away, i have to keep the revs at 3k-4k for a minute to get it to idle, and about 10-15 seconds into the reving it will smoke alot, and i mean huge CLOUDS of blue smoke (oil). The car always stinks of gasoline and it pulls like crap! Also at higher rpms (5-7k) it smokes quite abit. Also smokes and backfires as its coming back down from 6k.

And when its cold out i have to crank the engine 5-7 times cranking about 5 seconds each time to get it to start. after a few cranks it sputters, then dies, after a few more tries it does it again, then starts.

Is my motor shot?

Buy a $25 compression gauge and run a quick test. IF you get something below 90 psi the thing is slowly dying. Other than that, a set of sparkplugs might be really helpful too. Also check your battery or consider replacing it, as cranking speed plays a large role in starting/compression. However, the smoking when driving is just oil seals, doesnt mean the engine is *going* to die soon, but if the oil seals are worn that badly, the apex seals probably are too.

how about the injectors? if they are dirty wouldnt they also play a role in getting it started, and it smelling like gas all the time could be flooding..am i correct on this?

Okay, this is not a good thing... YOu NEED to have a look at the fuel system, there is a distinct possibility that you have a fuel leak. Left uncorrected, your car will catch fire.

Do you know where the Pulsation Damper is?

Took it to a mazda mechanic, he found and fixed a fuel leak, put in new spark plugs and wires, (old ones were shot) and i found out my leading coil pack is shot. Car needs struts, new exhaust and the master brake is leaking. Doh!

Good - you're working on the safety stuff first.
You can work on the performance stuff next.

It sounds like your mechanic is better than most.

Our older cars need a maintenance budget, but it's still cheaper than new car payments.
