need help asap! need new waterpump?

Hey guys,

so as you might know from my previous post, i was going to change my thermostat and the right side bolt broke off.

I went through a bounch of trouble becuase when i was drilling my old bolt out, my drill bit broke off and got stuck in the bolt.....so i finally got the drill bit off, and i drilled a new hole.

Here is the thread, it explains better: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/i-broke-thermostat-bolt-rusted-496929/

It was suggested that i just put a longer bolt in there, and put a nut on the other side and it should be tight.

Well, i went to put the long bolt in and put a nut on it, but there is no space at all for a nut. Am I going to need a new water pump? The bolt wont get tight because the new hole doesn't have any threads.

I have no car for tomorrow so i'm screwed.

What to do?

is there enough material around the new hole to allow you tap it and use a slighty larger bolt?

edit: Ideally though in the case of a waterpump, you don't want a premature failure right? so if its even close on having enough material to tap......don't bother......as mentioned below you can find new housings for a dime a dozen.

you don't necessarily need a whole new water pump, just a new or used aluminum housing.

i have one laying around, let me know if you need it.

Is it fairly easy to remove the old housing and replacing the internals on the new one?

yeah something like that, if this was something more expensive and harder to replace tapping it would be better, but i think it would be easier to just replace the housing.

Drill to a bigger size and tap the whole. If that dosn't work, you will need a new water pump housing.

Just get a WP housing from 'alexdiman' or whoever and save yourself the headache, lol. Or post in your local section and meet up with someone in your area who's got one laying around. No point wasting any more time on something as silly as a jacked up WP housing.

Is it normal for my waterpump to start turning brown every cople of months? I put a new one in September and it's already all brown, the one before that was all rusted also.

on a couple of months?

No, thats not normal, it must be extremely dirty in there, or you are not flushing the cooling system like you should. I'm not questioning your ability, i'm just trying to help. So....do you fill it up with water and run the car, with the heater on full blast?flush it out like that, repeating it until the water drains out clear?

you might want to use coolant system cleaner?

Once the water runs out clear, put water in there again, drive around with the heater on full blast, and drain it out a last time.

Now you're ready to mix coolant and water....
