Need help

Hey guys, I was driving down the road about 4k in fourth gear when the car stopped like i had shut the key off, it lasted for about a second then stopped and drove fine for another 20 min. After that twenty min it just quit and would not start. Now the gas guage doesnt seem to work all the time so i though even though it didn't say it was empty it might have needed gas so I added some and it would not start. I let the car sit for about an hour and then it finally did start but it idles funny and revs very slow.It also had a strange clicking noise. Any ideas on what happened? oh its an 89 GXL with148 000 kms

If by chance you did run out of gas then you likely pulled the bottom feeding debris lounging around the lower depths of the fuel tank into the fuel system and might have clogged the fuel line at one point or another.
