need help

need help

I put my key in and turn it, volts just drop to nothing. Turn the key, nothing, and there no power to anything really. My thought is bad alternator, but dont know. what do you think it could be?

Well the first thing I would do is take of the battery cables and clean those and the battery terminals thuroughly.

Then after they're clean make sure that they're afixed to the battery pretty tightly. And try to start car again.

Other than that, your starter may have went on vacation.

When you open the door do you have interior lights with no key in the ignition? Now, with with the key out turn the headlights on. If no to both you have a dead battery. Volts will tread zero with key in but not turned to any position even with a fully charged battery. Will flip down to no charge with the key turned signals a dead battery

Cleaning the battery terminals wil not give you a charge. But do clean them well before you do the charge. Use a terminal cleaner. If it went dead because of grody terminals charging will not keep.

Before you swap out a starter be sure to check you ground. Quick way, jumper cable from neg on battery to a bracket on engine.

my battery terminals are covered w/ black stuff, cant even see the metal, thanks for the comments. I have to work on it tomorrow.
