Need advice on water pump housing...

I just pulled my waterpump so I can install a new one.
I've never done this before so not sure what I need to look for.

Anyways, I have a new water pump already. I was going to take off the old water pump and simply put the new one on (with new gaskets, etc).
However, when I got the old pump off, I saw that the housing was pretty pitted.
Should I worry about this? Should I buy a new housing? Or can I grind it down a little with a dremel and smoothen it out some?

Are they "clean" pits, or are they full of white powdery crap? And how thin do the "important" internal walls get?

theres no white powder in it. i guess they're clean pits then.
as for the "important" internal walls, what do you mean? that reddish lining? if you're talking about that, then there are some pits that have eaten away the lining...

You don't want to use any high speed sander as it may cut too much and it will leak if not even. Just sand down by hand and use silicone on both sides of the gasket and torque down *evenly*. Instead tightening one side at a time, tighten the corners then sides alternating top to bottom left to right. Do this until you could get the bolts somewhat tight then go over them again and this time tighten it down. Don't overtighten them since there is no need to .

I have found two areas where pump housing erosion can be a problem:

The bleed hole in the internal wall between the inlet & outlet side should be no more tha 1/8"

The bypass port that's about 1" under the thermostat seat should be small enough to be covered by the spring loaded disc on the bottom of the stat.

My old 87 housing was really bad.
I repaired it with Bondo Marine Epoxy putty stick.
It was still fixed a year later when I sold it.

whats the importance of the reddish lining of the housing? mines pretty eroded too in some places.

also when i pulled my pump, the housing came free of its seat as well.. do i need a full gasket set now?
