Narrowband tuning...
yeah, i know that narrow band tuning is bad and all, but i dont have the money or the time to wait for the money to go otherwise. I need something to just allow me to get an idea of whats going on while i get things set up. Could i get away with using a Autometer A/F just get the car running? Please dont give me the "well youll blow everything up" response. i want a useful answer with a reason. I mean, it has to be better than nothing right? i have looked for diode style but they seem to not make anything affordable anymore. I want analog! sigh...damn technology.

Simply put, NO. The narrow band device won't react fast enough, for one. Secondly, it simply doesn't have the range to do you any good. Once it is outside its parameters, it is going to give you completely false readings which will do you no good if you try to tune to it.
Think of it this way. You have a tire swing and a 12" ruler. Now, while standing in front of the tire while it's at rest, push it to get it swinging in a wide arc. Now, without moving from where you are, use the ruler to measure how far away from you the swing is at any point in its path other than right in front of you...with your eyes closed.
You can't do it. You simply don't have to correct tools to handle the job. Trying to tune like that isn't much better than randomly guessing and punching in numbers based on those guesses.

Let go of a couple of bucks and subscribe to this site.. http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_2055/article.html
That article should give you a good foundation for tuning with a narrow band.

i dont have 300+ dollars for a wideband right now. i just want to get a base setup so the car will at least run decent, not be tuned to perfection. So i might as well just guess then?
