NA stumbles

I found a nice 88 NA car that I am interested in buying. And I'm new to rotaries.
It hasn't been driven in about 2 years. It's got 70k km on the clock, very clean underneath.
It struggles a bit starting, but idles well at 800rpm.
It revs up ok, but stumbles a bit returning to idle.

I realize there isn't much information to go on here... and the engine hasn't been checked out yet (will be tomorrow). May the stumbles be an indication of a deeper problem? Could it just be old gas or a case of needing a tune-up?

Thanks for any advice or tips.

Does it sound like a popping noise in the exhaust when your decelerating or is the engine actually stumbling around. More descriptive please

No, doesn't sound like popping.
Hard to say how it sounded from the back since I was the one working the gas pedal.
I haven't driven the car yet, just revved it while parked.

I'm looking at it again tonight. I'll have a better idea after that.
