Mystery shifter bushings

After doing ALOT of searching I am still unable to find anyone who sells the Third bushing that sits at the bottom of the shift lever in S5 FC transmissions.

The Junkyard I went to won't sell me just the bushing. So wtf, I'll spend the $30 to buy that whole stupid block thing to get it from Mazda new. If anyone knows of where I can get one though, please post it up, or Pm me. I'd rather spend just like $10 for a new one.

Maybe I'll try to reproduce the bushing at work or something once I get one.

I know some of you out there must have foudn a good solution to this. If not you probably share this headache...

thanks chimeron. Called RX7world.com.....no luck there either unfortunately. Anyone else know of somewhere to get one>?

I placed an order for that whole piece from mazda. I really hope I can pop this bushing otu of the block when I get it. I'll see if one of the maintenance guys at work can do it if I cannot...

still if anyone knows where to get one, post it up!

the thrid bushing you are talking about is not used in the FC trannys. the 1st and 3rd gens use the bushing but we do not. i have ordered the 3rd bushing that you are looking for a 3rd gen and it was no where close it fitting on the end of the shifter. http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm shows all the bushings, 17-462A-0398 is the one you are talking about and trust me it will not work on your shifter. the 1st and 3rd gen shifters are different and require it.

a question for you though, did you have a thin orange rubber/plastic cup looking thing in the bottom socket of where the shifter sits. i know i did but it was tore up and ripped, we removed all the peices and i didnt put anything back in place of it. mazda denies there be anything down there and they dont have a part # for it. the part i listed above is white and thicker plastic that will not fit. from what i understand not all FC's had this mystery orange bushing, but some did. noone has ever found a replacement for it, nor have i.

i have not been able to get the tranny into 2nd ever since i got the tranny used from a member. i dont know if this is because of the missing orange bushing or because the tranny is shot. are you having similer problems? let me know, i really want to get to the bottom of this, im sick of shifting from 1st to 3rd.

using your last link as the source: what is 17-5150-M501? appears to be for s5 and fd's only. i am wondeirng where it goes as i hvae replaced allt he other bushings and boots in my quest to eliminate the rattle and the large amonts of play int he shifter. unless there is a bushing of some sort that the bottom of the shifter, then i fear the shift rods are worn and will need to be replaced.

part (A) in the above picture is a bushing for the FB and FD trannys only, the FC trannys (both s4 and s5) did not use that bushing according to mazda. and if you were to order that part (A in the pic, part #17-5150-M501) it will not fit on the end of the shifter like it should. its a white plastic cup that the lower ball on the actual shifter sits down in, the FC shifters lower ball will not fit into that bushing. i have tried.

but from what i understand there was a bushing or sorts from mazda on some if not all FC trannys. i bought a used tranny and down in where the shifter goes there was a thin peice of orange rubber/plastic that was broken and destroyed from the oil and heat. mazda does not have a part # for this orange bushing and i dont think all the FC trannys had them. i do not know if it is needed or not, what i do know is that i cannot get my tranny into 2nd. all other gears are fine, i have no idea if the tranny would go into 2nd before i took what was left of the orange bushing out.

if anyone knows anything about the orange bushing let me know, or even let me know if your tranny had/has that bushing in there.

I believe this orange bushing at the botom of the lever is nesacary to for S5 trannies from what my searching has uncovered. It eliminates the play at the bottom of the shift lever where it mates with the control fork lever thingy.

I can feel the extra swing, and when you look at the socket the shift lever ball fits into and compare the sizes something is wrong.

the 17-5150-M501 bushing goes on the shift lever where the pin that stops the lever from spinning mates to it. it's only on S5 transmissions. Same with the bushing at the bottom of the tranny.

My car needs 4 bushings. in my first post I said I needed the third. while I did need that also, there is another, the one this thread is about. 3 are available from mazdatrix. The one I search for seems available nowhere.

I just hope the part I ordered from Mazda has this 4 bushing in it. if it does, I'm going to pop it out and find some one who can replicate it. I may be able to do it at work even.

My FD tranny had a similiar swing in the shifter, and there is a bushing available from mazda trix to resolve this for the FD. I don't understand why no one sell a replacement for the FC... or why Mazda doesn't know these bushings exist.

If some has a tranny with the bushing still in, see if you can post a pic.

There is no bushing... how many threads do we need to have on this???

AGAIN>...F^@# >> LETS DO IT AGAIN for the crack smokers, newbies, and people that can't search!!!:

Just look at the small ball at the end of the shifter. It is a different size than the Miata, SA/FB and S6 R-type tranny.

Now, rip apart the upper shifter end of the tranny. The metal flange fits perfect into the FC shifter ball. The only exception is on the lame drivers that didn't replace the upper and lower main shifter bushings when one of them failed. Then there becomes too much play and it elongates the soft alum or brass retainer for the ball (the spot that some of the people above in this thread claim there is a bushing in).

Now wait... how do little hunks of orange, (actually white, but faded by the grease and could also be blue, or black) plastic get down there??? I hear some of you saying, "now how did all the hunks of plastic get down there if there was no bushing?"...

Simple, when the main shifter bushings fail, they FALL DOWN into the cavity... longer time down there, the more they become shaped to the lower ball.

Okay... wait I hear another question..." but wait, how come the FD shifter does not fit into a FC R-type (turbo) tranny???"

BECAUSE THERE IS A BUSHING ON THE FD but NOT THE FC... get it.

Wait... one more, “why would there be a bushing on a S5, but not a S4?"... Ahhh that is the beauty of this... Mazda went cheaper on the S5... They did not do one thing that cost them more money (or even as much money as it cost them to build a S4) on the S5... do you think they would re-design the whole shifter assembly internally following the cheap route that they did on the S5?? of course not.

Why can no one find a part number or even exploded veiw of this bushing on a FC??? BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EXIST!

So to sum it up:

FC = no lower bushing
SA/FB (with 12A) = Lower Bushing
FB (with 13B) = no lower bushing
FD = Lower Bushing

i have no idea what you are talking about, can you get a pic of what you have.

is that the bushing that you are looking for, that what keeps the shifter from spinning.

and that white bottom bushing that i am talking about is only for the fb and fd, here is what it says on mazdatrix website. "(A) 74-80, 93-95 Nylon 17-462A-0398"

if you goto a dealer and look at the shifter parts diagram you will not find a bottom bushing because it does not exsist on FC trannys according to mazda. but some of us have/had a bottom bushing that was a thin orange peice.

**edit**
ok, what icemark says makes sense about the bushings failing and collecting in the bottom of the shifter, the heat and compression from shifting would form a bushing looking item. i knew mazda didnt have a part # for this but i thought it was just over looked or something. and when i pulled out what i thought was a bushing it fooled me, i would have never thought that it was just reminants of the old bushings. thanks icemark for once again clearing things up.

The part in your picture is only found on the side of weaker/smaller S5 shifters as a guide for the alignment pin. It is there to help keep down the shifter noise (but tends to wear down if the main shifter bushings are worn out).

There is no bushing at the bottom of the shifter. No little orange thing, nothing, nada, etc

well, if this bushing really does not exist, that would make sense why it's impossible to find.
