Question The Mysterious Ticking Noise

Hi,

I'm like.. going crazy looking for this cursed ticking/leaking noise. It could be a ticking time bomb ffs, like this
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tx1XIm6q4r4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Anyway, here is my spec

1987 Turbo II S4
mods:
- RB Rev II Exhaust system
- removed all solenoid except twin scroll
- emission mod (removed acv, abv, air pump, PCV, EGR, rest is in tact)
- removed OMP

What I did
- Killed a lot of fairy trying to find the source of the ticking noise
- Swapped a COMPLETE running late model 88 Turbo II engine, with all original parts. (ECU, Alternator, AFM, Emissions, OMP, Wire harness, Clutch and Flywheel)

The car had the same noise before the engine swap, and the noise stayed even after the swap, the car currently has these idle assist modules (BAC, Thermowax, Thermovalve, ASV), everything else is removed. Car's idle bounce between 900 to 1000 and rattles when hot, running really rich, and I can hear irregular popping noise at idle from tail pipe. Car idles fine when cold tho.

I've pretty much ruled out BAC ticking noise, because the car did not have BAC. I also ruled out exhaust because I've tighten the exhaust and double checked it was tight. I ruled out turbo fin hitting housing because THE TURBO CAME WITH THE SWAP AND HAVE ZERO SHAFT PLAY. I don't know where else to look.

here is the actual video of the noise filmed

The wire appears to be housed at pin 3G. It is a ground wire. Be sure to put that wire back in it's place.

I had a similar noise. I *think* my noise was coming from my turbo manifold that was leaking, due to to a stud that broke off in the block. I've not been able to verify this, though. My car has been on jack stand for a few months now.

Ticking noises will drive you crazy. It could be damn near anything. The fact that you say it is still ticking after a complete engine swap is pretty vague. Not your fault... I'd start looking at electric components and other moving parts that you have not replaced.

I put an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator on my firewall. It makes a noticeable ticking at idle/low rpm's.

Could be an injector (and coincidence) even after an engine swap. However, it's probably an exhaust leak. They are VERY hard to find, being they are right near the engine and all the ambient noise makes it hard to pinpoint with your ears. Also the heat and awkwardness of the exhaust system make it very hard to even feel for one.
