My T2 conversion log
Well I bought another FC- a beat to hell 1988 base model- no thrills at all. It literally needs all four fenders and both doors fixed or replaced, the windshield is broken, and its painted a in a heavy grey primer-sealer.Its a 4-lug car with phone dial wheels and Sears Best tires. Not exactly a head-turner. Not that it matters but the car runs extremely well, the transmission is sound although the shifter is beyond sloppy, the brakes and hubs are all sound, and overall the car DOES drive well despite its grubby looks. None of that matters though, because its all being ripped apart
SO on to the "new" bits-
I picked up a complete 91 Turbo2 engine, wiring harness, ecu, transmission, driveshaft, rear diff and halfshafts from a really nice guy in New Jersey. I am also getting a complete 5-lug conversion complete with brakes etc, if not from the same fellow then from another rx7club member.
I also have picked up from e-pay, other forums, etc:
ERC coilovers
solid motor mount kit
Heim-jointed camber links
urethane suspension bushing kit
a vented fiberglass hood
set of Rota Slipstream 17X8 wheels in "Royal Gunmetal"
"widebody" front and rear fenders
cheap fiberglass front and rear bumpers
Tanabe upper and lower stress bars for the front
Stock Turbo2 rear wing
FMIC core- actually just had one on hand for another car, so away we go
Still need to pick up a few things, including:
rear stress bar of some kind, it seems Tanabe doesnt make one?
New seats- the ones in the car are horribly worn out- thinking some cheap e-pay jobs but the Sparcos we have on the shelf keep calling my name
Considering a "sleek light" kit, but need to research whats out there first.
VERY SERIOUSLY need a new throttle body, the shipping company damaged mine and I need a new one BAD.
Considering an alloy radiator, but not sure one is nec. just yet- will have to see how things go.
The hardest part of this whole deal will be the bodywork. Aftermarket bodywork always sucks to fit, no matter if its for a Porsche, a Camaro, EVO or RX7, it rarely fits the way you expect it too. I hope to be surprised when we go to fit this stuff, but I doubt I will be. The nice thing about plastic(FRP) bodywork is the ease or working with it as opposed to metal panels. The car will be painted Porsche Grand Prix White once the bodywork has been fitted, and with luck will look much better than it does now.
Actual work will begine most likely this weekend, as I will be swapping the NS motor out and the T@ motor in. Without a throttle body though, I doubt it will actually run.
I will post some pictures when I get a chance
