My T2 build thread. Lots of pics. Drift car.

Here is my '88 Turbo II. It is soon to be a drift car. I have been collection parts for it and i am going to be starting some work here pretty soon. But here is is with my list of mods so far.

-Full rebuild using 3mm apex seals/ FD side seals and springs/ new rotor housings

-Full LARGE streetport (intake and exhaust ports)

-Ported internal wastegate

-Knife edge ported throttle body

-Custom made intake housing

-S5 RX7 turbo (off an '89-92 RX7 Turbo)

-750cc secondaries/680cc primary injectors

-FCD (Fuel Cut Defender)

-Walbro 255lph fuel pump with Walbro adjustable fuel pressure regulator

-2571 engineering block off plates, PD elimination mod (emissions)

-Apexi N1 muffler

-Apexi SAFC-II

-LSP Manual Boost Controller

-Greddy Type RS BOV

-Greddy 31v FMIC

-XTD stage 3 racing clutch

-ACT aluminum flywheel/ counterweight

-Short throw shifter (cut)

-Intrax 2" lowering springs

-Tokiko Blue shocks

-RB sway bars

-Aftermarket drilled brake rotors

-18" TSW wheels(265r/245f)

-Autometer 6" racing tach with shift light

-Autometer Boost/Oil PSI/ Water temp/ AirFuel guages

-Limo tinted windows

-Gutted interior

The car came with no radiator, coils, intercooler, intercooler piping, down pipe, midpipe, air intake hose/ MAF/ air filter, and BOV.

I have bought a stock radiator, stock MAF, stock T2 coils, Greddy 31v intercooler, Greddy Type RS BOV, Turbonetic SS manifold, Garrett GT37 turbo, Tial knock-off wastegate, and an Apexi SAFC-II.

Throw out the front swaybar, you will hit it at full lock.

Throw out the XTD clutch, unless you want to replace it in 5k miles

A cut shifter is not a short throw.

That List of modifications is pretty impressive. How much of that was done uppon initial purchase? Tsw s look pretty aggressive on there with that width and offset. XTD is ****. My clutch lasted just under 6k miles. You have more power than i do and will be replacing it in less time. Overall.......really nice though.

I will look and see if my tires hit it. I would imagine they would. And i will remove the sway bar if they do rub.

HAHA... I am deffinatly getting rid of that crappy XTD. I have heard nothing but bad about them. So dont worry about that. I will most likly go with an Exedy.

In my book a cut is a short throw. You can really get any shorter of a throw than a stock RX7. But i understand that is it crappy to cut a shifter and i bought it like that. I would never do that to my own car.

Yes it runs. I have started it like 5 times. Here is a video of my first start up. The car sat for a long time before this. And the car had ALOT of parts missing in this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL7jY_BFph4

There is a long story on the car. But basically the guy that i bought it from said it was only a mild street port. But the guy that did the mods said it was a LARGE streetport. He said it sounded like a bridgy.

My plans are to have the car fully done and turned into a drift car by December of this year. I am going to take my time with the build and do it right.

Thanks man. I have bought alot of stuff for the car but most of it came with it. The guy i bought it from did nothing to the car. The guy before him bought the car like 15 years ago and he did every single mod to it. The car was the 2+2 leather seats i found out! It is suppose to be a rare option.

I am getting rid of the XTD.

Those wheels are pretty awesome. I think they look good with the offset. I will be painting them neon green in the near future. I hope they will look good!

no it is not a short throw because you haven't changed the pivot length at all. it just a hacked up stock shifter that sits lower.

and may I suggest you look int ACT clutches. they are (in my experience) the best bang for the buck clutches.

BTW, what size turbo is that?

Welll.... Go take a pen and hold it in your fist at the top of the pen... move it like a shifter. Then do the same but at the bottom of the pen. The distance your hand moves is shorter therfore you have a shorter throw.

I have been doing some reading on clutches. I really like the way that Exedy has made there stuff. IDK if i want an ACT... i want to be differant and try something else.

The turbo on the RX7 is a stock S5 and the other turbo is (believe it or not) an older Garrett GT37!!!!! That thing is a monster.

^^^^^I have a stage 3 six puck sprung act in mine........really nice feel. Night and day from the xtd. I say go for it, you are good with either that or an exedy. Both are quality.

I will get either. I want something really really stiff. The car is not going to be street driver/street legal so i dont have to worry about streetablility.

yes, I'm aware that your hand will physically move less travel, but you will require more force to do so since you've shortened your lever. the whole point of a short throw is to decrease the travel while maintaining ease of shifting. it's suppose to be a performance modification to aid in driving...not so you can just say you have a shorter throw.

nothing wrong with an exedy. I believe they make some OME clutches.

paganizondadude This is good advise, I have this situation. The sifter that came with the car when i bought it wasn't right, replaced it with an AM one from my 91 3/S vr4 (T.T), it sits lower, and is as you said a shorter throw, HOWEVER, the leverage problem is more complex than the above describes. Yes it is heavier to move the stick, but like i said its more then that. Selecting gears is more difficult as the stock length forces you to move the stick in the right place when you lower that length you can get into gear but selection is maybe 4 out of 5 shifts are usable. You are not planing on making this street legal which means your aiming for performance. I spend 6 hours a day in my 88 N/A GXL, thats what i get paid to do, there is nothing more scary to me then approaching a turn or any downshift and the stick wont move in. The difference is I'm on the street so my speed isn't as high as yours is going to be, if go into a corner and you cant down shift what is it that you think your going to do??? Your going to hit your brakes, lock your tires, and in "It's a wonderful life" before your sister falls off the horse and snaps her neck, your car comes to a stop, you loose your power, your time goes up, you loose your focus and your line. That scenario is the BEST CASE the worst case scenario is you enjoying a meal with an insect that will soon have wings to flying around bugging the people you left behind. sure thats blowing it out of proportion but you need to fix your stick. The people on this forum arnt trying to sell you something so listen to them. Sometimes your going to have to spend another penny on your whip, but isnt it worth it? If you need someone else to say it I'll back the above, replace the stick, even if you have to get a stock one.

Good luck and i want to know how it runs when you finish getting it up.

no offense, but that sounds like a mix between sync issues and bad driving.

That car sits really high on Intrax Springs. Maybe it's the struts... I'm on stock struts.

And tons of companies make short shifters. Corksport, Mazdaspeed, and Mazdatrix just to name a few off the top of my head. I hear even Miata ones work?

In regards to clutches, my ACT Stage 2 has no problem clutch kicking, I beat the **** out of my clutch and it still grabs fine (installed by PO, at least 30k of hard driving on it now). While you're down there, I hear the stock flywheel is a little easier to learn on.

Do you plan on reinstalling power steering? The wheel doesn't snap back as much as I'd like it to with a depowered rack, I'm still debating but my car is not solely a drift car.

I am actually looking for a less geared steering rack so it is like one turn to lock. Does anyone know of such a thing?

I am going to see how well it drifts without power steering and if it is too bad i will be putting it back on.

I think they make something called a steering rack quickener or something, check the drift section.

Without power steering, I'm not having the steering wheel snap back when I want to swing the other way. Prepare to use a lot of force very quickly to get the car to change directions.

I will look and see. I know my dad wanted me to go find out some more information on this subject.

So your not really having troubles? You just got to have a strong upper body to turn/hold the wheel? haha.

I am use to cars with no power steering. My other racecar is the same. It is a pain in the *** but it is worth it to not have the weight and loss of hp.

i drifted a long time with a power rack converted manual. never thought twice about it. as long as you have flow then you wont be fighting the wheel at all. basically just stopping it where you need it and minor corrections. otherwise i just watch it spin on its own.
