My son just bought a 86GXL w/86xxxmiles for mu son

OK I hope my son got a great deal. 86GXL with 86xxx mile new tire and clean. I think the engine has been replaced or rebuilt. I see new gaskets every where and look like engine bay has been steam cleaned. Bought it from awhole sale dealer. So no history other than carfax.
So I fave no record or engin history. Any tips in finding out if original motor or did the steam clean just clean gasket areas. Looks like it has a new alt and water pump.

Also can any one tell me what wheels these are from
Tire s are 205/60/15
Look at the pics.

Damn Alex! I guess every car you're around ends up looking really good. I wish mine could come close. It looks very nice (not as nice as the black FD though!).

My son and I are going to go through this like a fine tooth comb. First up is reliablity. There are some minor details we need to take care of right away. Some rust and paint buffing and lubing all the power windows and sun roof. Installing factory radion etc.

That looks damn good! Now that its all clean, you will have no problems detecting leaks. No more of that "was that there, or did it just start?"

Right on!
I think car is running rich. I turned the Rich/Lean pot and no rpm change so I hope CPU is working.
Its running smooth no missing. I'm thinking there was alot of engine work done. Its almost to clean for an 86GXL. I'm not bitching though.

Anyway to tell. I know about the all the cold solder joints I need to resolder just like my 86Sports.
CPU, Logic controls the idiot lights and what ever boards I can easily take apart to re-solder.

Anyone know what wheels the FC has. I don't care for these wheels a bit. Wish they had the original directional 5 spoke.

Paid $2400 for 86XXX mile 86GXL.
Still trying to find out if motor is original or some one did a hell of job with a steam cleaner.

Have you done a compression check? I say just because the engine is clean externally, doesn't mean it is internally.

Hey-
Nice car! The rims are S5 GTU rims (same as on the 90 GTU I'm selling).
I have a set of S4 GXL wheels (the 5 spoke 'baloney slicers') with old tires. I'd be willing to trade straight across for your wheels.
PM me if you are interested.

That is a really nice gxl i like it but would have paid a little less. Its clean and if the body is straight and no rust i d say its worth it.

I paid $2400 for my '86 GXL, with 90K, and it wasnt *quite* as clean as that, but pretty close. I'd say you got a pretty good deal. Nice Car And yes those wheels ar from a 89-91 coupe

The engine bay picture is hard to see. But if you want to check to see if its original engine..

I can see the stock Hose clamps.. first sign it wasn't rebuild.. most people will not put 16 years old hose clamps on a new engine,, they may, but I doubt it...

Check the vaccum lines, all factory lines have numbers and painted lines, not all but most have this..

86, thousand is not many miles..

also do a overall check of all the nuts and bolts.. do they appear to have been wrenched on before?

also if rebuild some parts may be missing... just do a good overall view of the engine..

Nice s4. I paid 2700.00 for my 87 base with 85K miles on it and it looks at least as clean but bein in Cali there is no rust at all. I would pay that again in a heart beat for a nice clean car.

Also I got a friggin book with all the scheduled maint records and a list of all the new parts put on.. New alt in 2K new logicon in 98 ect.

Of course after I got the springs, K&N filter, AGX shocks, 4 piston breaks.. have not installed yet, strut bar, short shift kit, changed all the fluids ect.. I have gone a LITTLE over my 2700.00 initial investment. hehe

Props to the FC :-)
