My REW swap

The FC started off as a basic NA S5 with a street port, but with my luck, the oil control rings went on it. I drove the car around many months like that, constantly dealing with large oil consumptions and the embarassing smoke.
That was when I found the REW swap done by Zbrown and Boost innovations.
I know his was a bit more intense with all the custom fabrication and the GT42, but it still motivated me to do this "not worth it" swap.

So a few months ago, I picked up a 13b-rew for a great deal.
It's all stock except its setup to be non-sequential and to be premixed.
In the summer, I ended up giving it a quick paint job and began assembling everything. I followed the non-seq vac lines from a thread at Nopistons.com, not sure how accurate it was.
Im using an S4 TII transmission and a Spec clutch.
For the engine management, I picked up a used E8 that was previously tuned for a stock REW with non-sequential turbos.

I will be taking parts of the engine bay off and putting them in my box sand blaster and repainting them. My main concern right now is getting it running. I will be ordering a lot more parts once it fires up, especially a new radiator.
Here are pictures of where I am now (I wish I took in progress pictures).
Im only 18 and this is my first swap which I do after my Welding class or on my days off from work. It may look like a mess, but it is coming, so be gentle :)

(I don't know why the pictures look fuzzy, but whatever)

Its a start, i always wonderd what it would be like to have a 13brew in a fc:Wconfused

stylEmon 12-01-08 01:51 PM

i just want the intake manifold!!

jaggermouth 12-01-08 01:54 PM

Yeah, I could have went with a TII swap, and then put the FD UIM on, but meh.
Haha, the swap is a lot of fun. My dad is doing rust repair on a Plymouth Satellite beside me so its a great experience.

demontwig 12-01-08 02:00 PM

Nice job! How did you choose to mount yours? What all do you have left to do?

stylEmon 12-01-08 02:00 PM

i had to do rust repair on my FC gas tank... not a great experience

Going to school to be a Welder, Im not proud of my choice.
Im using those Motifab mounts, but once I get going a bit more, I will be making a whole new setup.
These mounts just came with my engine so I decided to give them a try.
In all honestly, they arent THAT bad, they are solid so we'll see.

DavidHolmesIII 12-01-08 04:01 PM

Thats quite an ambitious project for such a young man. . . keep it up. I've always wanted to do that.

Ya it is, but I think he'll be happy. I just hope it fires up without much trouble. There were a few issues with mine, but it's kinda hacked together since I'm a broke ass FC owner

How long have you been working on this swap?

jaggermouth 12-01-08 04:15 PM

I bought the engine in the summer, but didnt start on it till I was finished boarding, heating, and painting the shop which was about 3 months ago.
I tore the NA out at the end of September.
Ive come a long way in that amount of time especially for the amount of free time I have.

My dads a big car nut so I have every tool I need which saves a lot of time.

I shouldnt have any problems firing it up, the Haltech was terminated when I bought it, just had to wire the ignition and fuel pump up.

That kind of brings me to this question (i posted it in the Haltech section, no answers) but since this Haltech was running on the REW + FD coils, will I have to change the settings in Halwin to make it work with my FC coils?

87 t-66 12-01-08 05:20 PM

looks good. i would have went with the RE though.

arghx 12-01-08 05:30 PM

The FC and FD trigger the trailing coal differently (FC has a toggle signal), I'm not sure if that will require different settings though. Make sure all your CAS wiring is shielded... I don't think the FD CAS has as many problems with the Halteach as the FC CAS, but be mindful of electrical noise.

jaggermouth 12-01-08 06:33 PM

Yeah its not shielded properly ATM, I still need to fix one of the clips.
What do you recommend for shielding?

I guess I can always see what happens when I try and crank it over with the current settings, I'll see what it looks like in the software.

The reason I went with the REW over the RE was because the REW was 50kms away from me, no shipping hassles.

Good job mang,
I did the REW too What are you doing for an innercooler? Move the battery to the passenger bin and it will give you some room. IMO

For shielding I used foil tape and then put it in tubing so it wouldn't be ugly

What years satellite? I had a 74

I won't thred jack ......any thing I can help answer PM me

sameless pic

That might be because the REW doesn't have a CAS.

Make sure all your grounds are good and clean too. That helps alot.

except for the fact that it does, it just happens to be a Hall-effect type that is mounted on the main pulley (like most modern vehicle), vs the reluctor type that the FC has.

jaggermouth 12-02-08 05:34 PM

yeah that air to water looks interesting.
I was planning on making my own v mount, but I want to get it all set up so I can try and fire it up, then Ill go wild ;)

Nope, it's still a reluctor type and also has the same "effective tooth" count(12+1) as the FC. Because it's directly mounted on the crank, it eliminates any error due to gear slop or end play slop over the FC CAS.k

Hm, very interesting.

Im going to pick up a 2 bar map sensor at Lordco tomorrow (ECU is tuned for the 2 bar), is there a specific part number I need? Or will any GM work?

There won't really be any progress this week as Im working after class a lot.
I will be asking lots of questions, but any suggestions so far?

My suggestion is to PM Reted he just LOVES REW in FC's

jaggermouth 12-02-08 08:44 PM

He means well, Im sure.
I know he isnt to wild about the mounting method I chose, but neither am I.
Other than that, I dont know why he has a reason to hate.
When I get it running, then Ill start running my mouth, haha.

EDIT also looked in the haltech manual, got my part number...doh!

jaggermouth 12-13-08 02:47 AM

No pictures yet, but I put on my downpipe and I will need to extend my exhaust about 6" to meet with it.
Bought my MAP sensor, O2 sensor, and a Wl220 belt for the waterpump to the main pulley.
Im still waiting for my alt and starter (stupid customs).

Just thought Id bump my thread up so I dont forget about it :)

Osirus9 12-13-08 03:20 AM

is that v8 in the background plan B?

jk, lookin good.

jaggermouth 01-05-09 03:00 AM

Got bored, bled the clutch, bought all my fluids, belt, O2 sensor etc.
Also went and tidied up my wiring a bit, still need to paint my ypipe and alternator, but since I have a day off tomorrow finally, Im going to fill her up and try to start it. my Haltech is detected in Halwin, so Im pretty stoked on that.
Took some more pictures with my Christmas present.

RotaryJun 01-05-09 03:05 AM

Great project. It's coming along nicely. Any bigger plans with the REW?

jaggermouth 01-05-09 03:09 AM

I wanna be confident I can swap an engine in and have it running nearly stock.
After that, I want to get my hands on a blown coolant seal REW core, rebuild, port, and single turbo it. By that time, I should be making some decent money welding and be able to have a bit more room for "errors" :)

RotaryJun 01-05-09 03:14 AM

That sounds good. I was thinking about running a stock REW in mine but there's a lot more work than just running my stock S4 TII. I'm hoping to build a track car by myself in the future.

You know how to tune that Haltech or you planning on learning? I wanna run stand-alone but I have no idea where to begin tuning.

jaggermouth 01-05-09 03:17 AM

No idea how to tune...I mean, I grasp the concept, but Ill leave that alone for now.
I bought my Haltech off of a forum member who was running the same engine setup in his FD.

Kind of a shame, all my "in progress" pictures were taken with my cell phone, so I only have these current ones. I wish I would have done a nice big build thread, but still, feels good to be doing the swap myself.

jaggermouth 01-07-09 12:04 AM

Well I got it cranking with the starter, sounds healthy.
Now I need to fix my fuel leak and make new oil cooler lines.
Any quick ways to make an oil cooler line until my SS lines get here? I really want to just fire it up for a few seconds.

TitaniumTT 01-07-09 12:10 AM

Not really. Think about the pressures the lines are under with cold oil and high idles. Hell, prefectly "good" brand new lines can leak sometimes. Sadly, I'd wait. I also don't enjoy being on my hands and knees inhaling brakekleen fumes de-oiling stuff if I don't have to ;)

RX-07 01-07-09 12:19 AM

Lol whats up man i know u dnt know me or whatever but i've been doin the same swap for a little bit now thats crazy. just thought i'd say somethin im almost done myself.

jaggermouth 01-07-09 05:52 PM

Yeah its deffinatly a time consuming swap...I was using my stock FC cooler lines, they BARELY made it to the rear iron, but I know someone close who has some stainless lines from Mazdatrix that Im gonna buy for now.

In all honesty, just hearing it crank was fucking sweet lol

need RX7 01-07-09 07:16 PM

Looks like it's coming along really well. Good luck getting it running (and getting all your stuff in the mail, lol). It's also inspiring to see other young members (I'm 17) doing something big with their car, it makes me think 'Maybe it is possible to make something without a full-blown career and a huge budget.' :icon_tup:

jaggermouth 01-08-09 03:18 AM

If you live at home, then that's the time.
My dad happens to be a car nut, so I have a huge selection of tools, and when I was bolting the flywheel nut on, he came home from the shop where they work on locomotives and he handed me a socket and bar big enough lol.

The reason I'm doing this swap is because the car has put me through a lot of shit from the oil rings going out and other unlucky crap. I want to forget about those times and make it run great with the power of an FD :)

Deffinately need a pay check coming in to do anything like this. I work at a grocery store so I try not to let my account go lower than $1000, Im also not wasting money on exterior appearance or stereo systems until I get it running and road worthy.

RX-07 01-08-09 12:35 PM

Im doin the same shit man. I been workin on my stuff for like 9 months (periodicly) Im running the fd oil cooler and the only reason im doin the swap is cuz my F&*kin motor blow out to when i was doin like 130 on this strip. But anyways its all good im runnin the fd tranny fits nice.

foreveryonetosee 01-13-09 04:50 AM

props on the swap it took me about a year and a half to complete mine and ive dropped about $20,000 into it total and the damn thing still dosnt run lol. but another $600 and it will so no worries.

Exeacute24 02-17-09 04:52 PM

Hot shit! Man I am working on the same project right now.... Im running stock 13B-REW. Ecu, twin oil coolers, twin turbo set etc. I am also using the TII trans... Need drive shaft hmmm, what drive shaft did you use? the TII or custom? Ive been working on it for nearly a month now coming down to the home stretch of the project...

post some pics!!

jaggermouth 03-19-09 08:53 PM

So since I have a shitty welder, it makes spray transfer nearly impossible, so I didnt want to relocate the big round cross brace making my vmount a wee bit hard to do...My rad isnt sitting at 90 degrees to the IC, but what I was planning on doing was making a piece that bolts to the radiator that covers up the ugly brackets n such and to seal more air in. I bought the summit rad for $100 locally, so Im trying to make it work, but if I alter the angle, is moves it to the ground or it hits the waterpump.

Heres a pic, but bare with it since im still working on it

SonicRaT 03-19-09 09:10 PM

How tights the dp to the frame & subframe? I've got a spare REW. Looks fun :)

jaggermouth 03-19-09 09:11 PM

its AMAZING how well the DP fits, its like it SHOULD be there lol, only thing is your exhaust might have to be extended

SonicRaT 03-19-09 09:42 PM

Cool I'm going to have to do some test fitting. Anyone got a good picture of that area and the mount setups?

jaggermouth 03-19-09 09:47 PM

Ill get both of those for you by the weekend...

Any input on the VMount? Like I said, I think thats the best I can do with the tools I personally have. I think it will look good once I get the duct and covers all done

blue87 03-19-09 10:27 PM

looking good!

jaggermouth 03-19-09 10:43 PM

thanks man, positive feedback is good to hear!
I want to drive it so bad lol :(

clint999 03-20-09 05:10 AM

Thanks man, Ill deffinatly look into the ignition settings because I believe you are right.
And I will be shielding the wires.
