My keys won't turn all the way

When I start my 89 GX, half the time, the keys have trouble turning all the way. It usually gets stuck in the middle, right before the on position when the radio/clock come on, sometimes the radio/clock comes on at almost the same position, but it doesn't go any further.

The solutions I've found for this are:
a) wiggle the steering wheel while i turn the wheel, but this doesn't work all the time
b) activate the steering wheel lock and wiggle the steering wheel and turn the key at the same time to deactivate the steering wheel lock, which also subsequently allows me to turn the key all the way (this took me almost hours to figure out). This also doesn't work everytime, but it's never failed me with consecutive tries.

It's really pissing me off, anybody know what's wrong? Is there any sort of built in theft deterrant system that does not allow the car to start? That's my theory. I recently ripped open the door trim, this probably couldn't affect anything, but that's the only thing i've really done since this started happening.

your ignition switch (the key part of it) may need replacing.
