My horn is blowing on its own! How do I get the steering wheel cover off?

Horn started blowing all on it's own today while I was driving down the road. I think something came loose inside the steering wheel, there's a new rattle in it when I turn the wheel.

This is an `87 GXL with the two spoke wheel. after removing the column cover and the screws in the back of the spokes, the edges of the steering wheel face will come up, but there is something else holding it. My haynes says there's a screw under the center cap, but I cannot locate any. I've talked to a few other s4 owners and they seemed to get it off fine after removing the screws from the spoke backs. I guess tihs gay 2-spoke one is different or something.

Oh its the big *** retaining nut for the steering wheel. See the wheel cover is attached to a frame which is bolted UNDER the retaining nut. Take out the nut and that thing should just pop out.

Man at least your horn is blowing..mine is busted.........no road rage for me

heh, I prefer rocks and bolts for road rage

So the whole wheel comes off when I take that nut off? Do I need a steering wheel puller, or just lock the wheel and wrench it off?

i think the are two screws behind the steering wheel but my couzins 86 base did this and it was a prob under the hood and not in the wheel itself

Well, there was something ratteling inside the steering wheel when I turned it. That's why I figured it was a problem in the wheel. So I undid the screws on teh back of the spokes and went to find a socket big enough for the center nut. The first one I tried was too small, but when I was pulling out of the hole, it caught on teh edge of the cover and pulled it back. When that happened, a screw (apparently what had been rattleing around) fell out of the edge of it. It seems that the screw was shorting the horn's switch and tripping it off.

Not sure what the screw went to, it was smaller in length and diameter than the ones holding the cover on, but not much. Unlike them, it had a point on it. I'd guess it's used to hold one of the horn switches on, but both still seem to be firm.

Not blowing anymore though, and that's the big thing.

Not that u'd care anymore since ur horn problem is fixed..but that little screw may be one of the 3 holding the plastic horn cover to the metal frame.
