is my gas mileage supposed to be this low?

I filled up my tank and cleared the trip odometer (or whatever its called) and 217 miles later I'm out of gas. Most of these miles were spent on the freeway averaging 80mph and I don't have a lead foot.

Does anyone know whats wrong? Am I running really rich?
My car and mods info is in the sig. Thanks.

Even my TII, which is obviously running pretty rich, can do 600 freeway-kilometers on a full tank, more than 700km if I'm careful and very gentle .

Your N/A should be able to hit at least 700km on the freeway. Something's wrong here......maybe the guy at the station was a very forgiving person, and he has forgiven his fuel-pump for the HUGE errors in measurement ??

On my GXL I got about 240 miles out of tank of gas...in the CITY. On the highway I could pull about 400 miles or so before I'd start running on fumes.

Replace your O2 sensor and check out your injectors.

I replaced my O2 sensor with a Bosch one not too long ago but I'll check to see if its still working. How can I check my injectors? Do I have to take those suckers out?

you have to remember, that the later cars have a couple more gallons in their tank than we do, so the numbers that other's have posted may not be relevant.

If I do an entire tank of gas on the freeway, I will get around 340 miles. Or near 25mpg depending on how fast I'm going.

If I drive in the city on a whole tank of gas, I will get less than 200, or about 14mpg.

Your numbers aren't that off, but are you OUT of gas, or is the light on? Unless you go fill up and do the math you really won't know what mileage you are getting. If you mileage is bad, the wired open ports might have something to do with it

The most I've ever got out of my 89TII is about 240 miles on a tank (which is 16 gallons). Ususally it's only about 220 miles or about 13 miles/gallon. And I commute about 60 miles a day!

At times I wish that they were just a bit more fuel efficient. Oh well thats the price for drivin' a 7 =).

For my 92/91 TII:

16/19 - spirited driving
19/24 - 3200 rpm shifts

THat's using the OEM setup.

I just got around 15mpg from my N/A...you have to take into consideration that I shift at the earliest 5500 RPMs, usually 6000 or more actually. Driving, how should I say, normal?...you should get 20mpg at least I would think, especially on the interstate.

Just came back from a trip to Corpus Christi. I do this trip, 430miles each way to the national seashore, about ten times a year and consistently average 24-25 mpg. Drive the speed limit of 70-80 (limited by fear of the insurance going up with each ticket). We in Texas practice civil disobedience on the highway, not dodging the draft. Your right about checking out a new oxygen sensor, plugs, airfilter and maybe a look at the compression. I think I remember 28mpg coming back from Corpus, but that was with a 30 tail wind all the way(hurricane season does this). That 217 miles mentioned if done on the hwy is crummy.

On my 1st n/a 90, the most miles i ever got out of it was 454 miles, and it turned out to be like 28.9mpg or something like that.
On my 2nd n/a 90, right before the motor let go, it got around 19-20 at the very best. Now the new motor, i have'nt checked yet, but its getting better milage than the origonal motor that came out of it. Must have been realy low compression or something. CJ

If you were doing 80 MPH on the highway, you won't get good MPG. Even in 5th gear its not geared too well for saving gas at those speeds. I drive mostly city and was suprised to see I got over 18 MPG. I now often take the car out of gear if I can coast up somewhere, it drops the revs big time, for a big savings in gas. I also shift up soon if I am not "getting on it" to save gas, It works and makes a big dif, where you shift. If your not in a hurry and want to save more money/gas shift by 3500 RPM's, instead of taking it to the redline. Good luck and of course make sure your car is in good tune and has proper alighnment!
Happy motoring!

Ive gotten as high as 29.2 per gallon but that was all highway miles. The 3.90 rear end really made a significant incress over the stock 4.10 gears. But yea keeping your RPMs as low as possible is the best way to save fuel.

Also if your running low compression you'll have to accelarate harder to get power out of the engine.

And I think mine car is DIEING
