My FMIC piping install thread (pics)

Ok so i ordered one of those cheap *** ebay FMIC's, 9"x20"x2.5" and a 2.5" piping kit. Installed it, but had problems with the piping blowing off on the turbo side. Also noticed a 1.5 psi drop in boost, i suppose because of the bigger piping and longer runs, and crappy IC. But intake temps at the TB on hot summer days were usually only around 100 F, so i guess its doing some good.

So i realized i needed to get the piping flared, and while i was at it , i tried to straighten out some of the bends. Before, i had the piping do two 90 degree bends to get around the headlights. So I took a hole drill and cut out the section right behind the headlights, so now the piping is a lot straighter. Hopefully it will flow a little better, lessen the boost drop, and the piping wont want to pop off so easy.

I still have to do the turbo side, but i think is a lot better. Ill update as i get the other side done.

definatly get the piping bead rolled, and invest in some decent silicone hoses. Besides that looks good

bovs can be mounted anywhere on the intake track... doesnt matter what-so-ever the location.. either before the intercooler or after.... im gonna have 2, 1 on each side of the intercooler

What about the $100 TB adapter?

$300 for your parts list, but the GReddy kit streets for like $900.
It's more like a $600 savings?

Closer placement to the turbo = faster reaction to compressor surge, but you end up "stalling" all of that intake charge from the BOV to the TB.
Remember, you need to accelerate all that stalled intake charge to get the engine to make power again.

Closer placement to TB = less stress on the throttle body, but you get slower reaction to compressor surge - see below.

The BOV is triggered by vacuum from the TB snapping shut.
The BOV operation is not instant.
There is a slight lag involved.

If the original intent of the BOV of minimizing compressor surge, ideally you want it closer to the turbo.

tooshay! forgot about that little tidbit! so yeah, $600 sounds like a reasonable savings (not to mention the $50 to get the pipes bead-rolled so they dont pop off the hose)...so $550

Looks great. A freindly observation though, watch where you cut out the place for the piping, looks like the piping is very close to the sharp edges and might rub through. Id wrap the piping near those areas with something or put some weather striping on the part you cut out. you might of already planned to do this but I thought I might save you some trouble since no one else saw it and said anything Keep up the good work
