NY My first sports car!

Hey I just bought myself an 1989 Gxl with 60,000 miles on it(I used to own an Acura TL and then a Jeep wrangler). Drove it from New jersey to NY without insurance to get the car home. So basically The tranny dies when im on the verazano Bridge(when i pulled it out I realized it barely had oil. It was probably sitting for a long time and leaked out most the oil) and I get stuck out there. Got towed Home(paid 200) and basically Now i have a Little project.

Heres the old tranny that i pulled out.

Oh I accidently bought a S4 transmission for my s5 So will this work(Back piece is from my S5 the main house is from the s4 transmission that i got for 150)

more pics of the car

This car is a learning experience basically. I cant wait to start driving her. I pretty much wanna hook this car up. Is it worth it in your opinion? is this car worth my investment?

If you want a fun car for the corners then yes it is worth it. If on the other hand you want to have some power too, then you should just start with a T2 or swap a turbo engine into your chassis. You would be starting a swap at the best starting point with your GXL. I have had a modded N/A and a modded T2 and the T2 is hands down more fun all around.

Hmmm how would I know if the engine is ported? I know its rebuilt because i see it has marking that say front/rear etc. How do I even know if its a JDm motor or somethin. The most i know is that its not the original motor.

I hear that. I have to pay for everything, trying to cut corners on spending by learning to do things myself. That haynes book is really handy and so are these forums. Lots of help and easy to find answers just by searching the thousands of pages of posts.

I havent uses a haynes manual since my friend had one for his subaru and it gave him wrong directions on some fuel lines and a few things. I find everything on here mainly or somewhere else on the internet.

Edit:By the way you may want to look into a dual belt alternator pulley or yohoo belt because i see you have no air pump and this will allow the water pump to slip and cool less allowing the car to potentially overheat. Do a quick search on here and you could read about it for days.

OK so i realized i have a problem and I cant pop the transmission in just yet. It seems that it doesnt go into reverse correctly when i try to pop it in. It gets stuck. So I try to see if its because the s4 bell housing and the s5 back piece isnt compatible but i compared both shift links and it seems like the link from the s5 is kind of bent.

For you guys that know about transmissions im talking about that long stainless steel rod that goes in there, the hook part is pretty twisted. I tried to twist it back into place with some success because it was easier to pop it into reverse but it still struggles to pop out back to neutral, I think I should just get a new one. any suggestions on where to get one? what the piece is called?
