Thumbs up My first Rx-7

Well, I am new here and I really don't know much about the Rx-7 except the the basics about the rotary engine, so I figured I should come here and ask a few questions. First I just want to know th basic stats of the car (Horsepower torque, 1/4 mile, slalom etc.) The engine has 140k, automatic transmission and has been very well keep. I wouls also like to know what are some of the popular modifactions that are made to the second gen. RX-7. The car is a daily driver and I want to be able to take it to the track and win a few races, what are some of the first things I should change about the car? Also what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Secong gen. Rx-7. Thank you for any information!!

read the FAQ at the top of the page... it covers pretty much all the questions you have and answers them. If you are not satisfied with those answers then search. Other people would not be so kind and flame you for asking questions like that. Welcome to the club.

Read the FAQ and other stickies. Be sure to check out the links. That should keep you busy for a few days.

Some things that you asked not covered in the stickies...

Racing - What type of racing and class? Never modify your car until you have the full set of rules, and talking to some of the RX-7 racers is always a good idea. I recommend starting in SCCA autocross, where you can race in the Novice class, and then in the Stock class, remaining competitive with NO modifications whatsoever (assuming you drive well, lol). I'm sure that there are similar classes in drag racing if that is what you like.

Modifications - This doesn't sound very exciting, but you should check over the car and replace any fluid, filters, hoses, fan belts, etc., that may need replacing. See the factory service manual "Pre-Delivery Inspection and Scheduled Maintenance Services" chapter for what to check, and I recommend using the "unique" driving schedule. You would probably want to inspect the "60 month" checklist items now, and then follow the specified maintenance interval after that. This will take a fair amount of time and money in itself. Tips - Use only a Mazda brand thermostat, save money by getting the proper NGK sparkplugs at a generic auto parts store like Autozone, and see the appropriate chapter of the service manual so you know the correct procedures for changing the parts.

Strengths - Engine lasts a long time (I hate to say it, but 140K is about the time they need a rebuild, although they may or may not keep running up to twice this long). Fantastic suspension and brakes, good static weight distribution. One of the few 2-seaters that can actually carry a decent amount of luggage on trips. Lots of aftermarket parts available. Good safety rating.

Weaknesses - The fuel rail pulsation damper tends to leak in its old age, causing engine fires which sometimes totally destroys the car. The ECU has a defect that will cause the engine to flood if you start the car cold and turn off the engine after driving only a few feet (such as moving your car from the driveway to the garage). The alternator can barely handle the stock electrical load, and often cuts-out if aftermarket electrial items are installed. Hard to find a good mechanic to work on the engine. These cars are old.
