my first race.................
This is a story about my first race in my rx7.
Friday practice went really well. We drove 5 20 minute sessions. The car worked very well. The roll cage stiffened the car and it handles better. Just need some more horse power. I got plenty of great in car video of the other guys passing me and some good shots of Chris in his rx7pushing me from behind.
On race day I spun in turn 3 when I tried to go to fast to early on cold tires. No problems with the car and I continued on. The heat race was the best for me as I had a big battle with George in his BMW. For the whole race I was always on his bumper and at one point I passed him. I kind of heated the brakes to much and left the door open just a bit while being cautious and George slipped by in turn 2. I stayed close but just couldn’t get him back. Great job George, I had so much fun.
In the main event I got off to a bad start but got back up to everyone and Chris and George where running nose to tail. Chris went a little wide in turn 4 and George went under him. I just followed him and got Chris to. To my surprise George went wide in the very next corner and I ducked under him. I was thinking cool 2 turns 2 passes. When I got to turn 14 Chris was on my bumper and the rx7 he was driving was faster down the front straight and he just went by me. In turn 3 I made a rookie mistake and tried to stay with Chris and went a little to wide and spun in the grass. I got to tell you from my 26 years of off road racing (mx and observed trials) that spin in the grass seemed to last forever compared to a crash on a bike.(i was going about 80mph)
The best part was I didn’t hit anything and just drove back to the pits for a talking to from the grid marshal. When I got back on I tried to move out of the way for some faster cars but just didn’t get that right and put my wheels off and had to go back into the pits.
On that trip to the pits I found out I had a problem with the steering column and after a lap I went in and called it a day. Even with a few rookie mistakes I had a great weekend.
i was actually in 2nd place(of 6) when i went off.
also some info on the race rules....
if the corner worker feels you were unsafe or got to far off track they have the power to black flag you and you have to go in to talk to the marshal and then they determine if you can go back out. they just want to make it safe for everone.

Hey Robert,
Sounds like a great race! Yeah, spinning in the grass can be exciting, was watching the Grand Am cup race at VIR, and those guys were just crazy out there..
What kind of pads are you running? 4 piston brakes right?
