My first 2nd gen!

This past Friday, I picked up my very first 2nd gen, an 87 base model. I've had an 84 for about 2 years, so this is a leap up for me.

I just had a couple of quick questions. On the way home, the clutch fan grenaded on me and I lost about 4 blades. I have since gone to the junkyard and pulled two fans from 1st gens and just swapped the blades, but I was wondering if anyone else had ever had a similar experience. We also decided to examine the water pump, and found that the shaft has a bit of a wobble to it, so that is going to be replaced. For those who have replaced the water pump, how difficult a job is it? I've got the FSM, which shows how to do it, but I'm wondering how long it actually takes as I don't have a lot of spare time right now--my wife is due on Friday of this week. I've got a ton of other questions, but I'll be doing a search to find those answers. I couldn't find anything about the fan situation in the archives, so I thought I'd ask.

water pump replacement is really easy! takes maybe a hour or so. Just make sure you use the proper coolant. Flush the radiator while your at it! And sory, ive never swapped fan blades, but personally i would replace it with a 2nd gen one.

Welcome to the dark side!!

Just an update, the fans from at least 84-85...mind you, just the blades themselves, not the clutch, are completely interchangable. In fact, they are identical! We did the water pump last night, and it is pretty easy--that is, if you remove the fan shroud. I tried to avoid it, but taking it off made the job so much better.

The only problem we ran into was with one of the water pump bolts. I think it was the last one I put on, and the bolt broke. Since we used a sealant, I couldn't test it last night to see if it was going to leak. We'll check it tonight, but if it does, well, I guess that's what I get for messing with the dark side!
