My Exhaust is smoking.....
I have a 87 TII and since i bought it a few months ago, the only problem that i have really been eager to fix is the idling problem...at least until now. Recently my boyfriend had taken off the cat and switched it with a straight pipe. The turbo spulls much faster now and takes much more gas. Well since the car isnt registered or have tags on it, I dont get to drive it as much as i would like. The car has sat in the driveway for about a week or two after he switch the pipe under the car. Now we started it yesterday so he could drive it to work because it was raining and he rides a motorcycle and all of a sudden....now IT SMOKES.
I am slightly freaking out. I turned it back on again to see maybe it was just a one in a time thing and it still does. Not too sure of what to do.
I have expressed my concerns to my boyfriend about putting the cat back on, but he is slacking in getting it done.
would having the two switched cause it to smoke or would another problem cause it to do so?? help me PLZ

using color of smoke isnt as useful as using the smell to identify whats burning.
and taking your cat out probably wont affect anything enough to make it smoke. putting it back in may clog it up.

Well without a cat your car will spool more boost, amirite guys?
So if you were beating on it you may of damaged the engine.
What color smokes, what does it smell like, if its white and smells sweet it was just from sitting for awhile coolent seeps into the chambers.

um yes really. putting on an aftermarket intake or exhaust, larger downpipe, or removing the cats increases flow to the engine, and flow through the turbo. the wastegate can only deal with so much pressure and the added exhaust will flow too much for the small wastegate, causing the turbo to spool more than it normally would.
this is why the racingbeat exhaust system for the turbo can add 50HP at the flywheel, and why they recommend getting a FCD. my car with a 3" system and ported wastegate runs 10PSI, no boost controller or anything.

i think that it may have been from sitting. i looked at the exhaust and noticed that it had something dripping out like water ( i suppose). i guess that because it had rained... it does that quite often.
Thanks everyone =)
And most likely wouldn't it just me oil if it's been sitting around for a while? Like the other guys said, pay attention to the color as well as the smell. Smoking from oil is a pretty common trait of our cars on a daily basis. If it's not smoking then we've got problems!

Edit-i think it was smoke from running rich, it was white/blue smoke.

10 psi on a stock ecu is fine if youve got a FCD. i wouldnt suggest it, but it is fine if your car is in good running order i.e injectors are shot, pump is good, engine and sensors are all tuned up.
im running a Rtek 1.7 ECU, Greddy 720cc secondaries, fully ported wastegate, and a walbro pump.

just to be on the safe side, open the upper radiator cap while the car is idling before it warms up. check to see if there are any bubbles. If it bubbles like champagne then you have a coolant leak inside the motor.
other than that it's normal for FC's to smoke for a while on startup.

on rainy days every car will appear like it is smoking more than usual..the removal of the cat has nothing to do with more less smoking..5lick do a full tune up on her(oil/coolant/plugs/fuel filter) then drive her a couple longer highway runs to get rid of any contaminents especially if the car sits alot..then go from there about problems..
